Elsa M. Zimmerman, age 101, of Monticello, died Saturday, May 11, 2013 at the Monroe Manor.
Elsa was born January 3, 1912, in Washington Township, Green County, the daughter of Henry C. and Minnie (Marty) Klassy. She attended Klassy Rural School and Monticello High School. Elsa married Waldo E. Zimmerman on November 10, 1928, in Freeport, IL. He preceded her in death in 1982.
She worked for many years as a cook at the Casino Restaurant in Monticello and was an independent woman who lived in her own home until age 97. She was a lifetime member of Zwingli United Church of Christ where she taught Sunday school. She was a member and Past Worthy Matron of the Order of the Eastern Star Alpha Chapter #114, earning her 50 year pin. She was relied upon as the family seamstress, enjoyed gardening and traveling, and was a former member of the Royal Neighbors.
She is survived by a daughter, Dorothy Schlapbach of Albany; a daughter-in-law, Carol Zimmerman of Meridian, Idaho; 6 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; many great-great-grandchildren; and one great-great-great-grandson.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a son, Neil Zimmerman in 2012; grandson, Martin Rupp in 1995; great-granddaughter, Bethany Early in 1996; a sister, Helen Abbott and a sister in infancy; three brothers, Kenneth, Harry, and Carl Klassy; and two sons-in-law, Bud Rupp and Hans Schlapbach.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, May 14, 2013, at 10:30 a.m., at the Zwingli United Church of Christ, Monticello, with Rev. Lawrence Balleine officiating. Interment will follow in Highland Cemetery, Monticello.
Visitation will be at the Voegeli-Newcomer Funeral Home, 360 S. Garfield St., Monticello, on Monday from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. with an Order of the Eastern Star service at 7:00 p.m. Friends may also call at the church on Tuesday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service.
Memorials may be given in Elsa’s name to Zwingli Church or the Monticello Historical Society.
