Elsa (Elsie) Nussbaum, age 96, of Monroe, died Tuesday evening, February 18, 2014 at St. Clare Friedensheim. Elsa was born September 7, 1917 in Feshel, Canton Valais, Switzerland to Benjamin and Walburga (Michlig) Meichtry. She immigrated to this country in 1921 with her parents and younger sister, Olga. The family settled in the Monroe area where Elsa spent most of her younger years. Elsie attended St. Victor’s Catholic Grade School and after graduation from 8th grade was sent out to work as a domestic for several families.

On July 25, 1936, Elsa married John (Jack) Ruef at St. Victor Catholic Church. They lived in Juda, WI where Jack was in partnership with Russell Carter in the IH dealership until 1947. During this time Elsie was a housewife and mother making many dear friends among the other women of Juda. Jack, Elsie, and their daughter Barbara, moved to Monroe in 1949 and in 1951 bought a house on 8th Street which was close to St. Clare Hospital. This began Elsa’s many years of employment as an aide at the hospital.

Her beloved Jack died on June 27, 1973 leaving her a widow at the young age of 55. On May 14, 1977, Elsie married her lifelong friend, John Nussbaum. They enjoyed 30 happy years together until John’s death in 2007.

She is survived by a daughter, Barbara (Fritz) Kopp; step-daughters, Kathleen (Ole) Bartelt and Mary (David) Deininger, all of Monroe; eleven grandchildren and twenty-one great-grandchildren along with numerous nieces and nephews. Elsa’s surviving sisters include Olga Preston, Mary Ann Blum, and Therese (Eugene) Snyder, all of Monroe. Preceding her in death were her parents; a daughter and son in infancy; her husbands; granddaughter, Emilie Deininger; great granddaughter, Monica Shininger; and a sister, Margaret Benkert.
