Eleanor Lee, 89 of Westby, died Firday, August 29, 2014
Eleanor Christine (nee Iverson Amundson) Lee was born on June 16, 1925 to Thorval and Christine (nee Larson) Iverson in Esofea. Following her mothers’ death from TB when Eleanor was two years old, she was raised and later adopted by her paternal aunt and uncle Marie and Albert Amundson; they lived in Westby. Eleanor attended and graduated from Westby Senior High School in 1943. While growing up, she developed a love of music; she especially loved to sing in church, school and musical competitions. She sang for many weddings in the area. She taught herself to play the piano, accordion and the guitar.
After graduating from high school, she attended Normal Teachers College in Viroqua; after completing her education, she accepted a teaching position through the Vernon County school system, were she taught at the Spring Coulee School for three years.
Eleanor met the love of her life, Clayton Lee in the summer of 1947. They were married on her birthday in 1948. They lived on a dairy farm one mile west of Westby. Eleanor always said she had her eye on Clayton. When he was hoeing tobacco near her parents’ home, she made sure to walk by when he got to the end of the row! Together they raised five children.
After Eleanor and Clayton sold their farm in March of 1970 they moved into Westby. She worked part time at the Cenex store for many years. She had more time to devote to her many hobbies. She loved sewing the most; she began quilting and made beautiful quilts for all the children and grandchildren. Eleanor started rosemaling and in 1991 she joined the Coulee Region Rosemaling Club. She enjoyed the camaraderie, painting classes and the Syttende Mai show. She was honored to win the Bekkum award twice.
Eleanor was a wonderful baker and made many Norwegian specialties. She always said she hated cooking, but she was a fabulous cook!
In May of 2013, Eleanor experienced heath problems, which caused her to move to Vernon Manor in Viroqua. Eleanor became the unofficial greeter since she loved to talk to everyone.
Eleanor is survived by her husband, Clayton; her children, James (Sherry) Lee of Phoenix, AZ; Jeanine (Jeff) Odenbreit, of Eau Claire, WI; Thomas (Sally) Lee, of Elkhorn, WI; and Katharine (Jay) Davide, of De Pere, WI; Eleanor was very proud of her grandchildren, Emily (Jon) LeNoble, of St. Paul, MN; Erica (Amanda) Lee Analla of Madison, WI; Cameron Lee of San Francisco, CA; and Rachel (Jake Cox) Lee of Viroqua, WI; Last year, a great-granddaughter, Helena Lee Analla was born, and a second great-grandchild is expected in September to Rachel and Jake. Eleanor had many very special people in her life, her daughters-in-law, Rita Lee of Madison, WI; Sonia Lee, Chicago, IL; Her sister-in-law, Betty Iverson of Richfield, MN; is a sister of her heart. Her dearest life – long friend, Ann Marie Hanson of Westby; shall always be a part of the family. Her niece, Carol Sorenson of Westby; was always a great help to Eleanor. She is further survived by many other relatives and friends.
Eleanor was preceded in death by her son, David Lee; her parents, Thorval and Christine Iverson and Albert and Marie Amundson; her sisters, Lilah Jones and Myrtle Viner; her brothers, Tilford, Alvin and Lawrence Iverson.
Eleanor’s family would like to thank the staff of Vernon Manor for their special care they provided to her. They would also like to thank the staff of Vernon Memorial Hospital for the tender care Eleanor and the family received, during Eleanor’s final days. God bless you all.
Funeral services will be at 11:00 am Tuesday, September 2, 2014 at Westby Coon Prairie Lutheran Church in Westby. Pastor Julie Wollman will officiate. Interment will follow in the Coon Prairie Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9:00 am until the time of the service on Tuesday at the church.
In lieu of flowers and plants, her family requests memorials to the Coon Prairie Cemetery Fund.
