Dr. Richard D. O'Brien

MADISON - Dr. Richard D. O'Brien, age 82, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Saturday, April 27, 2013, at Capitol Lakes Care Center in Madison, WI.

He was born July 7, 1930, in Randolph, the son of John and Margaret (York) O'Brien. He graduated from Columbus High School in 1948 and from Marquette University Dental School in 1954.

Richard married Fay Ann Weber on June 26, 1954. He served as Captain in the U.S. Air Force from 1954 to 1956 at Itazuki Air Base in Japan. Richard began his own dental practice in Madison in 1956. In 1969, he became a founding partner of Dental Health Associates, where he practiced until his retirement in 1995.

Richard was past president of Dane County Dental Assn. and WI Dental Study Club. He was also an active member of WI State Dental Assn. and American Dental Assn. He served as charter president of Northeast Optimist Club of Madison. He belonged to the Madison Curling Club, The Knights of Columbus, the East Madison Little League Coaching Staff, and Maple Bluff Country Club. He was an avid hunter, fisherman, and golfer. He enjoyed the camaraderie of his golf and card-playing partners at MBCC. Some of his best moments in life were spent "up north" with his family at Maywood Lodge.

Richard was a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church and former member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church. Richard will be remembered as a kind and gentle man who cared deeply for his family, friends, co-worker and patients. His Irish wit and great sense of humor will not be forgotten.

Richard will be dearly missed by his beloved wife of 59 years, Fay Ann; his daughters, Patricia (Greg) Guszkowski of Wauwatosa, Margaret (George Mehr) O'Brien of Wayzata, MN; his son, Daniel (Mary Jo) O'Brien of Madison; and his five grandchildren, Joseph, Kevin, Maggie, Ellen and Molly. He will also be missed by his numerous relatives and countless friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John & Margaret; step-mother, Claire; and brother, John O'Brien.

The family would like to extend special thanks to Dr. Thomas Ansfield and the 3rd floor staff at Capitol Lakes Care Center.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at ST. PETER'S CATHOLIC CHURCH, 5001 N. Sherman Ave. on Friday, May 3, 2013, at 11 a.m. with Msgr. Charles Schluter presiding.

Visitation will be on Friday at the church from 9 a.m. until the time of the Mass.

A reception will be held at Maple Bluff Country Club immediately following Mass.

Committal services will be held privately at Resurrection Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Edgewood High School or charity of donor's choice.
