Dorothy L. Sirny

Dorothy L. Sirny, 92, of Platteville, died on Wednesday, July 30, 2014, at Grant Regionals Health Center, Lancaster.

Memorial services will be 12:00 p.m. (Noon), Saturday, August 2, 2014 at the Melby Funeral Home & Crematory, Platteville. Rev. Zayna Thompson will officiate. Burial will be at Hillside Cemetery, Platteville. Friends may call from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service at the funeral home.

Dorothy was born on March 31, 1922 in Oregon, Wisconsin, only child of Harris and Grace (Showers) Harrison. Dorothy attended rural schools and graduated from Oregon High School. In 1940 she won the 1940 Wisconsin Dairy Queen, while being involved in 4-H. Dorothy was married to Robert J. Sirny on January 1, 1942. To them they had four children, Robert, John, Richard and Marilee. He preceded her in death in 1973. She married Roger Biddick and they lived at Trelay Farms, Livingston. He preceded her in death. Later she married Bill Vaassen of Cuba City, and he preceded her in death. Dorothy worked for State Farm Insurance, Madison. She studied and earned her real estate license in Minnesota and Wisconsin, working in the Twin Cities and later in Dodgeville, Wisconsin.

She was a member of the UW-Platteville Foundation Board. She was a member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ, Platteville.

Dorothy purchased a small home overlooking the ocean in Crucita, Ecuador where she just loved to spend her winters. She spent her winters there as long as she could travel. Her neighbors, the Mieles family, adopted her as their "abuela" or grandmother.

Dorothy is survived by four children, Bob (Judy) Sirny, John (Patty Pate) Sirny, Richard (Victoria) Sirny, Marilee (Lenny) Lonsberg; nine grandchildren, Tracy, Wade, Dylan, Allison, Dustin, Jasper, Sonya, Daniel and Ariana; and six great-grandchildren, Riley, Sabrina, Joanna, Orion, Shaden, and Maseo. She was preceded in death by her parents.
