COLUMBUS/MADISON—Donald H. Miller, age 84, passed away on Wednesday, August 21, 2013 with dignity and his loving family and God by his side at his home in Oakwood Village-East, Madison.
He was born to Harvey J. and Freda (Lindert) Miller in Milwaukee, at the home of a friend of his parents, on October 21, 1928. The family moved to Fox Lake until Don finished grade school, then to Wausau, where Don finished high school. He attended UW-Madison, graduating with a degree in chemical engineering. Don was married to Arletta Attelson on May 19, 1951 in Madison. He entered the U.S. Army the next month, serving in the Army Corp of Engineering during the Korean War from 1951 until his separation as a Second Lieutenant in 1953. Don began a 34-year career with General Electric becoming a plant manager by his retirement in 1986. He entered into a joint venture with GE and a Japanese company from which he retired and created a consulting business of his own. The couple moved to Columbus in 1991 where Don was an active member of the Columbus Rotary. He enjoyed fishing, especially the memorable fishing trips to Canada with his son.
Years after Arletta’s death, Don was married to Margaret Severson on May 14, 2005 at Faith Lutheran Church in Columbus where they were active members. He felt greatly blessed by being born into a religious family and dedicated himself to God’s work at many Lutheran churches in several states. Don started many ministries including youth groups, new church development as well as audio visual projects. He experienced a long productive life and was loved and admired by his family and friends. Don was a dedicated husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. He was a source of great strength and inspiration to the many lives Don touched and will be surely missed by all.
Survivors include his wife, Margaret of Madison; one son, Gary (Laraine) Miller of Vienna, W VA; a granddaughter, Dr. Heidi (Steve) Banko and their adoring children Lauren, Sarah, Evelyn, all of Falls Church, VA; one sister, Shirley (David) Mueller of Appleton; two step-children, Elizabeth(Mark) Challe and David (Deborah) Severson; three step-great grandchildren, Christopher Challe and Emma and Riley Severson; other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and loving wife, Arletta in 1997.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Monday, August 26, 2013 at FAITH LUTHERAN CHURCH, Columbus. Pastor Robert Moberg, Pastor Lisa Nelson and Lay Minister Sandra Schieble will officiate. Inurnment will be in Roselawn Memorial Park, Monona on Tuesday. Visitation will be from 5:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. on Sunday at the church and from 10:00 A.M. until the hour of service at the church on Monday. A memorial service will also be held at 1:00 P.M. on Tuesday, August 27, 2013 at Oakwood Village-East, Madison. Memorials may be directed to Faith Lutheran Church’s music ministry or Oakwood Foundation.
