MADISON-Donald “Don” Ampe, age 80, passed away at home, surrounded by his family and partner, Joyce, on Sunday, April 6, 2014.
He was born on March 31, 1934, in Clark County. The family later moved to Madison where Don graduated from East High School. Don married Patricia Lehr. He served in the Army and afterward founded and operated Ampe Excavating. Don was passionate about his business and skilled at his work on the job site. He enjoyed many sports and played on and sponsored many teams, including softball, volleyball and basketball. He was an avid fan of the Packers, Badgers and Brewers. Don enjoyed dancing, biking, playing golf and a good game of cards. He loved riding his motorcycle and spending time with family and friends.
Don is survived by his loving partner, Joyce Krogman; six children, Daniel, Corinna (Rod) Magee, Bradley (Ronda), Douglas, Teresa and Linda McKnight; grandchildren, Lyndsay, Jeffrey, Sarah, Luke, Trevon and Tyra; sisters, Bev Wehrman, Jean (Howard) Hasz, Ardis (Jeff) Hempel and Diane (Rob) Harms; and his brother, Gary (Mona). Don was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Gretchen; and his brother, David.
Funeral Services will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL HOME, 5203 Monona Dr., Madison, at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, April 11, 2014. Burial will follow the service at Cottage Grove Cemetery. A visitation will be held at the funeral home from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 10, 2014, and from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the service on Friday.
