Donald A. Mayer, 82, of Fort Atkinson, died peacefully at home surrounded by his family on Wednesday, January 1, 2014 after a long illness.
Donald was born on April 14, 1931 in Chicago, son of the late Andrew and Ella (Koenning) Mayer. He married Doris Wittig on December 26, 1951 in Lake Geneva.
Donald joined the US Army and served in the Korean War. While in the Army, he played first base for their baseball team. He was an avid Cub and Packer fan and enjoyed golfing at many different courses.
He is survived by his wife, Doris of Fort Atkinson; children, Debra (Tom) Phalen of Racine, Dale (Sandra) Mayer of Fort Atkinson, Diane (Fred) Wesner of Janesville and Donna (Jim) Schroeder of Jefferson; grandchildren, Pamela, Derek, Hannah, Rachel, Paul, Amy, Dusty and Mindy; brothers, Andrew and Gary (Cathy) Mayer both of Delavan and sister, Gail Cunningham of Richmond, IL. He was also preceded in death by his sister-in-law, Patricia Mayer.
A time of reflection will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, January 4, 2014 at the Dunlap Memorial Home, 604 South Main St., Fort Atkinson. Visitation will be from 1 p.m. on Saturday at the memorial home until time of service.
