David L Johnson

David Lawrence Johnson, age 76, passed away due to a courageous battle with cancer at the Serenity House in Tomah Friday October 14th with his loving wife of 56 years by his side.

He is survived by his wife Rose, their two children, Terrie (Ron) Nuttall and Dale (Kim) Johnson. David also leaves behind a sister-in-law, Jeannie Johnson, nephews Richard (Caroline) Johnson and Randy (Vicky) Johnson and their children all from California as well as grandchildren Shannon (Matt) Lund, Amanda Connors and great grandchildren Joey and Henry Lund. He was preceded in death by his mother Marion Bettin, Father Chester Johnson and Brother Larry Johnson.

David was born April 10, 1939 in La Crosse, Wisconsin and attended school in Necedah and Mauston after which he joined the United States Navy. After leaving the Navy David returned to Mauston where he met Rose, the love of his life and held many jobs throughout the years including auto mechanic, school bus driver, large equipment operator and working on farm equipment at Preston Sales and Service.

David and Rose purchased the local hardware store called Smith True Value Farm and Home in the 70's, now known as Mauston True Value. David had a knack of being able to repair almost anything someone would give him.

David loved serving his community and joined the Mauston Fire Department in 1970 serving until 4th of July 1993. One of his favorite things to do was helping fellow fire fighters cook for the 4th of July and selling concessions in the beer tent as well as helping with the firework entertainment. He was also instrumental in the Castle Rock Ski Show pulling skiers behind his boat. He was also a member of the Castle Rock Snowmobilers Club raising money to groom the trails for all to enjoy.

While his greatest accomplishment was that of being a great husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather David was also a great golfer and bowler and received many trophies and awards throughout his lifetime. He was honored with an award for Fireman of the Year in 1971 and most recently received an award from the Tomah Veteran Services' office for service to his country in the United States Navy. David will be greatly missed by all that knew and loved him. He was truly a very special person.

A Celebration of Life is being held at the American Legion Hall in Mauston Sunday October 23,, 2016 from 12:00 to 3:00 p.m. Military Honors will be held at 1:30 with lunch to follow.
