Christopher J. Olson, age 69, of Janesville, died Tuesday, May 6, 2014, at his home. He was born in Ravenna, OH, on Aug. 17, 1944, the son of Robert W. and Catherine (Bush) Olson. Chris graduated from Janesville High School in 1962 and Cardinal Stritch College in 1988, with a Bachelor of Science Degree. Chris joined the Janesville Fire Department as a professional firefighter in 1968 retiring in 1998 as deputy chief after fulfilling his role as firefighter, paramedic, lieutenant, captain and shift commander over his 31 years of service. Chris married Dawn M. Baumgart on Aug. 23, 1980, at the Church by the Side of the Road, Rockton, IL. In addition, Chris was a founding member and leader of the Wisconsin Paramedic Seminar and Paramedic Systems of Wisconsin (PSOW) offering continuing education opportunities for emergency services personnel. He was extremely devoted to his community and served in many capacities. Some of his involvements were Blackhawk Technical College Board of Directors, Janesville Morning Rotary Club, Rotary Botanical Gardens and its Board of Directors, United Way of North Rock County serving on its Board of Directors and also as its Chairman of the Board and past Campaign Chair, Janesville Area Crime Stoppers, Janesville Elks Club #254 and First Lutheran Church. Additionally Chris was a member of 4 Lakes Yacht Club where he also served as Past Commodore and Social Chair and was a multiyear recipient of the "Chris Olson Bent Prop Award." Chris loved good times in the company of family and friends. He was always good for a joke or a humorous story. Chris enjoyed boating, golf, snow skiing, reading, outdoor and indoor athletics, cooking, riding in his convertible, and being with his family and friends. He was also an avid Wisconsin Badger and Green Bay Packers fan.
He is survived by his wife, Dawn; a son, Christopher P. (Michelle) Olson of Beloit; a brother, Patrick (Cindy) Olson of Malone, WI; niece and nephew, Duncan (Jessica) Olson and Allison (Troy Ersland) Olson; ½ sister, Julia (David) Partridge Firestone of Berkley, CA; ½ brothers, Daniel (Debbie) Partridge of Berkley, CA, and John Partridge of Sonoma, CA; other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Memorial services will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 14, 2014, at FIRST LUTHERAN CHURCH with Rev. Naomi Garber officiating. Visitation with PFFA Honor Guard will take place on Tuesday from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the SCHNEIDER APFEL SCHNEIDER & SCHNEIDER FUNERAL HOME and CREMATORY, Janesville. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The Chris & Dawn Olson Scholarship Fund presently being set up at Blackhawk Technical College.
