WAUNAKEE/MADISON - Charles W. Kalar, age 87, passed away on Friday, April 26, 2013, at Agrace HospiceCare surrounded by his family.
He was born on July 13, 1925, in Marshall, the son of Ernest and Ethel (Huebner) Kalar. Charles married Alverda J. Jones on Sept. 16, 1947.
He served in the U.S. Marines from 1942 to 1945 during WWII. Upon return he went to work for the Madison Fire Department for over 31 years, retiring as a Lieutenant. He also worked for Sears the same amount of time he worked for the Fire Department.
He and Alverda lived in Las Vegas for ten years and loved to travel, play bingo, visit casinos, enjoyed the outdoors, and cranes. Charles also loved watching cartoons.
Charles is survived by a son, Lee (Jean) Kalar of Modesto, Calif.; a grandson, Scott Lappen; great-granchildren, Brittany, Patrick and Hunter; a son-in-law, Mike Moen; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Alverda; a daughter, Bonnie Moen; a son, Charlie Kalar; son-in-law, Patrick Lappen; and grandchildren, Terri and LeeRoy Kalar.
A Celebration of Charlie's life will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL HOME, 5203 Monona Drive, Madison, from 1 p.m. until 3 p.m., with military rites being held at 3 p.m., on Saturday, May 4, 2013. The family wishes to thank Agrace HospiceCare for all their wonderful care and support.
