Bette Jane Smyth

JANESVILLE - Bette Jane (Bentson) Smyth, age 89 1/2, of Janesville and Naples, FL, was Born to Eternal Life on Thursday, May 2, 2013, at St. Mary's Hospital, Madison in the arms of her beloved daughters.

She was born in Blue Island, IL, on Nov. 2, 1923, the daughter of George and Delia (Blouin) Bentson. She married Donald S. Smyth on Jan. 29, 1949, in St. Benedict's Catholic Church, Blue Island, IL. He preceded her in death on April 4, 2012.

She was employed as a secretary and receptionist for the Rock Island Railroad and later for Mercy Hospital.

Bette loved swimming, sitting in the sun, and walking on the beach in Florida as well as taking trips to Las Vegas with Don. She enjoyed shopping for the latest styles of clothes. Bette was always watching MSNBC and other news outlets to keep sharp. From Adlai Stevenson to Barack Obama, she loved following politics and passed her passion onto her girls to always be aware of the issues facing our nation and world. She stayed active right up to her last day. On April 13, she and the girls traveled to the Chicago area to see Rachel Maddow.

Bette took pride in her clean laundry and house, but most of all she lovingly cared for her parents, husband, children, and dogs. She prayed at least one Rosary for her family every day.

She is survived by 2 daughters, Leslie Smyth-Ayen and Susan Smyth both of Janesville; loving dog, Lilliebelle; nieces and nephews: Karen (Mark) Keefer, Deborah (John) West, Thomas Brennan, William Brennan, Jeffrey Brennan, Donald (Linda) Stephan, John Smyth, David (Judy) Smyth, Judith Smyth, and Rev. Dr. Douglas (James Chang) Smyth; brother-in-law, Donald Stephan; former son-in-law, Jeffrey Ayen; and special friends: Gary (Susan) Boe, Egil Boe, and George (Beverly) Buchholz.

She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; siblings, Jean Stephan and Kathleen (Ronald) Brennan; father and mother-in-law, Bruce and Jessie Smyth; and 3 beloved pets: Tammy, Molly and Annabelle.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, May 8, 2013, at ST. PATRICK'S CATHOLIC CHURCH, Janesville with a Eulogy for Bette starting at 9:30 a.m. at the church. Interment will be in Elm Lawn Memorial Park, Elmhurst, IL.

A visitation will be held on Tuesday from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. at SCHNEIDER APFEL SCHNEIDER & SCHNEIDER FUNERAL HOME & CREMATORY, 1800 E. Racine St., Janesville, where a Rosary service will be prayed at 3:45 p.m.

Lasting memorials may be made to the Rock County Humane Society.
