OREGON-Bernice T. Mitchell, age 98, formally of Oregon, slept peacefully away on Wednesday, Aug., 21, 2013, at Allouez Parkside Village in Green Bay.
She was born on Aug. 19, 1915 in Brooklyn, the daughter of the late Hans and Augusta Knudsen.
On Christmas day, 1940 she married the love of her life, Vernon (Scoop) Mitchell. Together they raised their children in Oregon, while she worked as the church secretary at St. John's Lutheran Church. She also served as an organist at St. John's for many years. From the early 1960's until her retirement she worked for the Oregon Public School System as the secretary for the High School Principal and Superintendent of Schools. She enjoyed gardening, cooking and entertaining friends and family. She enjoyed playing Bridge with friends and in her later years and continued the game via the Internet.
She will be sadly missed by her children, Ellice (Richard) DeBenedetto and Robert (Kathy) Mitchell; four grandchildren, Crista DeBenedetto, Aaron (Meredith) DeBenedetto, Heidi Mitchell, and Jesse Mitchell; five great-grandchildren, Gabriel, Alexis, Magdalena, Elijah and Raeann; sister-in-law, Dorothy Alling; and several nieces and nephews.
Bernice was preceded in death by her husband, "Scoop" in 1985; her parents; brothers and sisters, Mabel (Peter) Gunderson, Roy (Lena) Knudsen, Elma (Harold) Scott, Emily (Nicholas) Neamy, Ivah (Wallace) Wileman and Leslie (Vivian) Knudsen; mother and father in-law, Wenzel (Mary) Mitchell; and sister and brothers in-law, Ervin (Jeanette) Mitchell, Lester (Luella, Irene) Mitchell, Albert Alling, Victor Mitchell, Elmer Mitchell and baby Mitchell.
Funeral Services will be held at ST. JOHN'S LUTHERAN CHURCH, 625 E. Netherwood St. Oregon, at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 24, 2013. Visitation will be held at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of the service on Saturday. Burial will be in the Prairie Mound Cemetery following the service.
The family would like to extend their gratitude to the staff at Allouez Parkside Village in Green Bay, Dr. James Jerzak of Bellin Health and Erin along with the rest of the staff at Unity Hospice and for the love and excellent care they provided for our dear mother in her final years. Memorials may be given to St. John's Lutheran Church of Oregon.
