MADISON-Benedict F. Lapinski, age 93, of Madison, surrendered to the arms of Our Lord and joined his loving wife in heaven on Saturday, Aug. 3, 2013, at home surrounded by his family.
He was born on Feb. 9, 1920, in Plover, the son of John and Monica Lapinski. Ben attended St. Bronislavas Elementary School in Plover and PJ. Jacobs High School in Stevens Point. In 1938, he attended a dance where he met the “love of his life”, Ruth Lorbeck.
In 1940, he joined the National Guard and was in the 32nd Red Arrow Division. Ben was sent overseas when war was declared and fought in New Guinea and in the Philippines. When he returned home from the war, he and Ruth were married on Sept. 29, 1945. They lived in Plover and had three daughters. Ben went to work in the paper mill near Stevens Point. After six months, he joined an electrical apprenticeship program with McEntire Electric Company in Stevens Point. In 1952, they moved to Madison where they had two more children. Ben started working at Madison Newspapers, then Endres Electric, Lokken Electric, and H&H Electric. Ben retired in 1985, after 40 years as an electrician. He enjoyed time at the cabin in Winchester hunting and fishing with his wife and family. He loved toasting the Northwoods. Ben and his family were charter members of St. Dennis Catholic Church where they volunteered their many talents. He was a member of the IBEW Electrical Workers Union and the VFW Post 7591. He was a life member of the Knights of Columbus Council 531. He was able to travel with his son, Joe, on the Badger Honor Flight to Washington, D.C., on Sept. 8, 2012. Thank you to everyone involved that made that possible.
Ben is survived by his five children, Cassandra (Paul) Becker of DeForest, Teresa (Larry) Witt of Chippewa Falls, Sharon (Pete) Peterson of McFarland, Joseph of Madison, and Patricia (Ross) Pettey of Madison; sister, Helen Adams of Plover; seven grandchildren, Pam (Josh) Seeley, Peter (Julie) Becker, Duane (Kim) Snorek, Brett (Leslie) Riemen, Lisa (Chad) Paley, Katharine Pettey, and Jaclyn Pettey; 11 great-grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; and 5 step-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth, of 65 years; his parents; three siblings; and two grandsons, Michael Becker and Scott Snorek.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated for Ben at ST. DENNIS CATHOLIC CHURCH, 505 Dempsey Rd., Madison, at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 7, 2013. Entombment will follow at Resurrection Cemetery Mausoleum. Visitation will be held at GUNDERSON FITCHBURG FUNERAL HOME, 2950 Chapel Valley Rd., Fitchburg, from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., on Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2013, as well as from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service at church on Wednesday.
