MADISON / BELOIT - Barbara White Stanley, age 84, died peacefully surrounded by her family on October 17, 2016 at St. Mary’s Care Center in Madison.

She was born on January 19, 1932 in Pittsburgh, the daughter of Herbert Alexander and Mildred Irvin White. She graduated from Wilkinsburg High School in 1949 and received her B.A. from Penn State in 1953. Barbara married William Harold Stanley, Jr. in Chicago on October 27, 1956. The family settled in Beloit, WI in 1966 where she was active in many community organizations. Barbara was a very active member of the First Congregational Church. She also chaperoned countless school trips with her children. After a long career at Frito Lay where she made many lifelong friends, Barbara retired to Madison in 1997.

Fiercely independent, she travelled the world exploring many remote destinations, including Antarctica and the Amazon jungle. She also loved spending time with her grandchildren, taking them on many adventures of their own. Barbara was very proud of her family heritage and the accomplishments of her grandfather, William A. Irvin, and his many contributions to the industrial era of the 1930s. She donated many family photos and memories to the William A. Irvin Museum in Duluth.

She is survived by her brother, Walter (Liz) White of Bradenton, FL; two sons, William (Jan) and Scott (Denise) of Madison; and grandchildren, Libby (Kent) Taylor of Madison, Grace of Baraboo and Evelyn Brunt (Matt) Gregory of Denver, CO. She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband and her brother Herbert “Sandy” White of Pittsburgh.
