BARBARA RUTH MUELLER, of Madison formerly of Jefferson passed away Thursday November 17, 2016 at St. Mary's Hospital in Madison.
Until moving to Madison in 2006 to take up residence at the Oakwood Lutheran Retirement Community, she had lived in Jefferson all her life.
Born in Milwaukee September 10, 1925, she was the last surviving member of a pioneer business family that immigrated to Jefferson from Bavaria in 1848-1852. The daughter of Edward Philip Mueller and Winifred (Moffott) Mueller, she was a life –long member of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Jefferson, of which two great grandparents were charter members.
For many years she was active writing, editing and publishing in the field of philately and numismatics and author of three books on those subjects, including postage Stamps and Christianity.
The recipient of many honors, including the Lifetime Achievement of the Smithsonian Institution of service on advisory boards of the National Postal Museum.
She was well-known abroad as well, having been a 50 year Fellow of the Royal Philatelic Society of London. In 2009 she became a signatory of the Roll of Distinguished Philatelists of the Philatelic Congress of Great Britain, the first of whom was King George V in 1923.
Predeceased by her brother, Richard Edward Mueller, and sister-in-law Marjorie Henry Mueller.
Barbara is survived by her niece, Cynthia Mueller (James) Flanagan of Plymouth, WI, and her nephew Richard Henry (Gloria) Mueller of Sebastian, FL. Grandniece Kerry Flanagan (Benjamin) Wehmeier of Oconomowoc and Megan Flanagan of Plymouth and great-grand nieces Madigan Wehmeier and Lillian Wehmeier.
Funeral service will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday November 26, 2016 at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Jefferson with the Rev. Joshua Martin officiating.
Private family burial will follow the ceremony. Visitation will be on Saturday at the church from 10:30-11:30 a.m.
