MONONA-Adeline Longfield, age 88, of Monona, died peacefully at her home on Monday, Jan. 27, 2014.
She was born in Roxbury, Wis., on Aug. 29, 1925, the only child of John and Amanda (Ballweg) Speth. Following her graduation from high school in 1943, she worked at the Badger Ammunition Plant in Baraboo until V-J Day. She then moved to Madison and worked at a grocery store and at the Bank of Madison until 1954.
She married Frederick A. “Fritz” Longfield in 1953. Adeline was a proud homemaker and raised nine children. She was a charter member of Immaculate Heart of Mary church in Monona for 57 years and actively participated in the St. Anne’s Society. Adeline volunteered as a Girl Scout leader, and at Luke House, Port St. Vincent and Monona Meadows. She greatly enjoyed going to Badgers football (she referred to her tickets as her “golden nuggets”) and Badgers hockey games. Adeline was a devoted grandmother to her 14 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
She is survived by her children, Diana, Karen (Kerry) Maki, Brian (Kim), Laura (Scott) Merdler, Myra, Janet (Karl) Zobel, Marcia (Steve) Schollmeyer and Alan (Lori); her son-in-law, Mike Lutterman; grandchildren, Katie (Steven) Thomas, Ben (Ashley) Lutterman, Nathan Lutterman, Jonathan (fiance’ Katlin Dassow) Longfield, Sarah (fiance’ Sam Franklin) Longfield, Amanda (John) Gasner, Michelle Merdler, Michael Merdler, Matt Zobel, Danny Zobel, Jason Zobel, Mark Zobel, Allison Schollmeyer and Ryan Schollmeyer; and by her great-grandchildren, Lillian, Charlotte and Wyatt Thomas, and Fiona and Ian Gasner. She was preceded in death by her husband, Fritz in 2004; a daughter, Sharon Lutterman in 2013; and infant son, John in 1957.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at IMMACULATE HEART OF MARY CHURCH, 5101 Schofield Street, Monona, at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 31, 2014, with Father John Silva presiding. Entombment will be at Roselawn Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the service at the church on Friday.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Adeline’s name to the Capital Fund of Immaculate Heart of Mary Church.
