Madison-Winifred (Wendy) A. Johnson died peacefully on January 14th, 2013, at Sebring Assisted Living at the age of 91. Wendy was born in Chicago, Illinois where she worked as an optical assistant at the Illinois College of Optometry for 25 years. She was married to her husband Ben for 40 years. After her husbands retirement from his construction company Ben and Wendy moved to Verona to be closer to her family. Once retired, Ben and Wendy traveled extensively. They climbed the Great Wall of China, visited the Pyramids in Egypt and rode a camel, visited Australia and New Zealand and most of the capitals of Europe. In Verona she did numerous volunteer activities in the area. She was active in the American Legion and is especially noted for her volunteer hours at the Madison Veterans Hospital where she clocked more than 1000 hours. Wendy’s winning smile and easy manner made her loved by all who knew her. She had a rare combination of intelligence, incessant work ethic and sociability.
Wendy is preceded in death by her husband Ben, and her parents. Wendy is survived by one brother George of Covelo California and her three children James (Ann) Flaggert, Pamela (William) Scheibel, and Sue (Curt) Culver. 10 grandchildren Patrick ( Jessica) Culver, Christine Culver, Jill ( Adam) Brooks, Robert ( Colleen) Scheibel, Anne ( William) Young, Jeffery (Heather) Flaggert, Kara Flaggert, Joshua ( Elizabeth) Flaggert, Kelle ( Levi) Farmer, Joel (Rachel) Flaggert and 14 great grand children.
A memorial Service will be held on Saturday, January 26th at 11:00 am at St. James Lutheran Church in Verona.
The family would like to thank the staff at Sebring Covent Care Center and Hospice who provided exceptional care and comfort to both Wendy and the family.
