Wayne W. Purves age 87, died on Tuesday, October 30, 2012 at Columbus Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, Columbus. He was born on September 2, 1925 in Portage to Forrest and Helen (Hays) Purves. Wayne graduated from Portage High School. He attended Michigan State while serving in the U.S. Army from 1943 until 1945. He was employed as an electrician, first at the Borden Milk plant in Columbus and then for Gisholt’s in Madison. He retired from Badger Electric after more than 25 years of working in the Madison area. Wayne was also the former electrical inspector for the City of Columbus. He was a member of the Columbus Lodge F&AM #75 and was an active member of the Olivet Congregational U.C.C. in Columbus where he served on several church committees. Wayne was a founding member of the Columbus Sportsman Association where he taught hunter safety. He led the Junior Rifle Club. Wayne enjoyed the outdoors, spending time hunting, fishing and golfing. He was an enthusiastic sports fan, happily cheering on the Badgers and Packers.
Survivors include three daughters, Donna (Richard) Reamer of Dorchester, Judith (Lynn) Shaw of Apple Valley, MN, Kathleen Sharpee (William Gall) of Columbus; three sons, Steven (Mary) of Apple Valley, MN, Richard (Cindy) of Menomonie, Ronald (Susan Que) of Columbus; 15 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; a sister, Lois (Robert) McMahon of Wisconsin Rapids; a brother, Harlan (Pat) Purves of West Milton, Ohio; a sister-in-law, Evadene Purves; a sister-in-law, Phyllis (Ralph) Herzberg of Columbus; brother-in-law, Donald (Shirley) Cripps of Princeton, NJ, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Jean in 1994; one brother, Forrest “Babe” Purves Jr.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Friday, November 9, 2012 at the OLIVET CONGREGATIONAL UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST, Columbus. Rev. Lee Zortman will officiate. Interment with military honors will be in Hillside Cemetery, Columbus. Visitation will be from 5:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M., with a Masonic service at 7:45 P.M., on Thursday at the funeral home, and from 10:00 A.M. to 11:00 A.M. at the church on Friday.
