Madison - Victor Henry Dorn passed away on Sunday, March 17, 2013 at 85 years old. He was born on November 2, 1927 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Madison, Wisconsin. He was a lifelong Madisonian who had a passion for living life to the fullest. He spent his boyhood days playing with his brothers and friends at the Henry Vilas Zoo. He attended St. James Elementary School and West High School. While growing up, he worked in his father’s retail grocery store. Later, served in the Merchant Marine during WW2 and then served in the U.S. Navy as a Radio Operator during the Korean War. Once honorably discharged, he became a Salesman for Harder Paper Company. In 1955, his entrepreneurial spirit guided him to start his own retail hardware business, Dorn Hardware, within the Shorewood Shopping Center.
Vic loved people and showed it thru his “gift of gab”, great listening skills and gentle demeanor. His adventuresome spirit and constant desire to remain active led him to hunt, fish, bike, ski, boat, swim and travel. A member of the Knights of Columbus, Korean War Veterans, St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church, Odana Golf League and Sports for Active Seniors (SAS). As a couple, they enjoyed bowling, playing cards and golf. As a family, he loved vacationing in Waupaca, Wisconsin and Marco Island, Florida.
He married the love of his life, Carol Ann Durawa, in 1960 at St. James Catholic Church. They had four children; Matthew (Anne) Dorn; Lisa (John) Fahrney; Thomas (Wendi) Dorn; Sarah Dorn and eleven grandchildren; Lizzie, Stephen, William, Laura, Nicholas, Emma, Joshua, Grace, Lydia, Nathan and Noah. He is also survived by his sister, Margaret (Hillyer). Vic and Carol continued to build and expand their family business to seven hardware stores. He is remembered by his “second family” of employees and customers.
He was preceded in death by his mother and father, Margaret (Wastian) and Henry Dorn, and siblings; Arnold Dorn; Henrietta (Simon); James Dorn; Mary Ellen Dorn; Jerome Dorn; Dorothy (Preslik); Harold Dorn; Joseph Dorn.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, March 23, 2013 at ST. THOMAS AQUINAS CATHOLIC CHURCH, 602 Everglade Drive, Madison at 11:00 a.m., with Msgr. Donn Heiar officiating. Burial will follow at Resurrection Catholic Cemetery. A visitation will be held on Friday, March 22, 2013 at JOYCE-RYAN FUNERAL HOME, 5701 Odana Rd., Madison from 4 – 7 pm and again at the church on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of Mass.
In lieu of flowers memorials can be made to the Henry Vilas Zoo.
Vic’s life was a life of service, in which he was always kind and respectful to others, and put the feelings and needs of others before his own. He is dearly missed.
