Ruth E. Gerike, age 84 of Reedsburg, Wisconsin went home to be with her Savior on Friday, October 12, 2012 at St. Mary's Hospital Medical Center in Madison, Wisconsin.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, October 15, 2012 at 11:30 A.M. at St. Peter's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Reedsburg with Reverend Paul Crolius officiating. Burial will be at the Webster Prairie Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the church on Monday from 10:30 A.M. until the time of the service at 11:30 A.M.
Ruth was born December 8, 1927 in Chicago, Illinois the daughter of Alfred and Mary (Riess) Hirzel. She was baptized March 25, 1928 in Chicago, IL by Reverend John Zippence. She was confirmed on March 1, 1952 at Trinity LCMS in Tinley Park, IL. She was a Sunday school teacher for many years. She spent 30 years with the LWML holding all offices at different times. She was a 4-H leader in Illinois and Missouri and had been a club president at the University of Missouri extension. She married Theodore “Ted” M. Gerike on September 6, 1952 also at Trinity in Tinley Park. She attended church at Trinity Lutheran Church in Wisconsin Dells from 1952-1973, Redeemer Lutheran Church in Mt. Home, Arkansas from 1973-1975, Faith Isabella from 1975-2001 and St. Peter’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Reedsburg since 2006. She graduated from Calumet High School with honors in Senior Girls Council and the Girls Athletic Association. She graduated from the “The Cradle” Infant nursing school. In Wisconsin, she farmed starting with 800 laying hens and advanced to 5000, collecting, grading and selling eggs. She was involved with Labor for Christ for ten years. She made 614 quilts for St. John’s Hospital and Home Health in Missouri and World Relief Orphan Grain Train. One of her strongest and most important attributes was her faith and devotion to the Lord and her genuine concern for others was evident by her way of life.
Ruth was blessed with six children, Michael (Nancy) Gerike, John (Vickie) Gerike, Deaconess Dawn (Paul) Gerike Kacmar, Mark A. (Nam Sun) Gerike, Stephen K. (Gina) Gerike and Dian (Rev. David) Gerike Burge, 16 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and a granddaughter, Emily Gerike.
