Roland Wally Luchsinger

Verona, WI-Roland Wally Luchsinger died on Tuesday January 29 at Agrace HospiceCare, Inc. in Fitchburg following a ten year battle with cancer. He was born on May 2, 1928, in Belleville, Wisconsin to his parents Mathilda Wilhemena (Elmer) and Waldo Robert Luchsinger. On August 23, 1952 he was united in marriage to Verlis Irene Gust at Salem Evangelical and Reformed Church in Verona. Roland graduated from West High School in 1946. He then served in the U.S. Navy for 2 years and was a WWII veteran. After his military service Roland studied at UW-Platteville and graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Education in 1951. He then went on to earn a Master’s Degree at UW-Stout in Industrial Education in 1956. Later he earned a degree in Occupational Therapy from Washington University at St. Louis. Roland then attained certification in Special Education from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Over his teaching career he held a wide variety of positions. Roland first taught at the School for Boys in Waukesha for one year, followed by four years at Adams-Friendship High School where he established their Industrial Arts Program. He then served as Superintendent of Schools at Viola for two years. Roland then taught in the Madison School District, first at Marquette Junior High as a Special Education and seventh grade teacher for over ten years. He then taught at LaFollette High School until his retirement in 1987. Roland also coached the Central High School Hockey Team to their first City Championship. Roland enjoyed stamp and coin collecting, collecting Indian artifacts, playing bingo and poker, going to casinos, fishing, woodworking, having garage sales, metal detecting, and treasure hunting.

He is survived by his wife Verlis Luchsinger, six children; Patsy Jean (Stanley) Hook, Nancy Ann Dearborn, David Alan (Sue) Luchsinger, Barbara Kay (Tony) Smart, Dean Roland (Sandy) Luchsinger, and Timothy Todd (Lynn) Luchsinger, twelve grandchildren; Angela (Kenny) Beal, Jason (Becky) Hook, Valerie Rowe, Christine (David) Lee, Staci (Joe) St. Peter, Sarah (Brian) Bowdish, Ryan (Christine) Luchsinger, Jonathan Rosen, Gloria (Jonathan) Outlaw, Nicholas Luchsinger, Gillian Luchsinger, and Jaxon Luchsinger, seven great-grandchildren; Tyvin and Kyan Beal, Dominque Martinez, Cora Lee, Brady and Karson St. Peter, and Jesse Luchsinger. He is further survived by a brother Robert Harold Luchsinger, a brother-in-law Robert (Shirley) Gust, two sisters-in-law Judith Hansen and Joyce Gust, and other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a grandson Zachary Luchsinger, and brothers-in-law John “Chuck” Hansen and Clifford Gust.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 2, 2013 at Salem United Church of Christ, 502 Mark Dr., Verona, WI with the Rev. Mark Yurs officiating with burial in the Verona Cemetery.

Relatives and friends may call from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Friday, February 1, 2013 at the Becker-Beal Funeral Home, 109 Greenway Cross, Belleville, WI, and from 10:00 a.m. until time of services on Saturday, February 2, 2013 at the Salem United Church of Christ in Verona.
