He was the first of four children born Oct. 12, 1922 in Madison, WI to Albert and Anna (Stedry) Schmelzer. He graduated from Madison East High School in 1940. He worked at Madison Kipp Corporation until he was drafted into the Army. He was able to get a short furlough from officer candidate school so he and his Rosie could be married Sept. 3, 1945. He was then assigned to the motorpool in Tokyo, Japan until 1946. He joined the American Legion Post 245, and the Army Reserves, retiring as a "full bird" Colonel after 25 years. Bob worked at the UW Madison Dept. of Chemistry as a Machinist, retiring in 1984, and able to claim that a spring he built went up in the space shuttle. He held the office of Clerk Treasurer for the Village of Cross Plains for 30 years, and was a volunteer firefighter. He also volunteered at the VA Hospital for 23 years. His favorite accomplishment was transforming a pile of rusted parts into his coveted Model T Ford. He served as secretary for the local chapter of the Model T Ford Club. He shared his love of animals with his family, but held a special place in his heart for his favorite pet squirrel monkey "Chuck". He enjoyed retirement traveling, tinkering in his garage, spending time with family and friends, playing cards and fixing everything. He was an avid gardener and rode his bicycle for transportation and recreation. Bob is survived by his loving wife, Rosemary (Esser), his three children, Randy(Sheri) Schmelzer, Rita(Louie) Spahn, Suzanne Brooks, his grandchildren Tony(Beth) Schmelzer, Sarah Schmelzer, Lori(Dan) Tanner, Kurt(Erika) Spahn, Troy Spahn, Brandon Brooks, Ashley Brooks, step grandchildren Chris Perron, Jenny Thompson, great- grandchildren Savannah, Lucas, Brooke, step great- grandchildren Amayah, and Randall, and in-laws Virginia Faust, Delores Schmelzer, and Paul Prusaitis.
