COTTAGE GROVE/MADISON- Robert W. Helvig, age 95, of Cottage Grove, passed away on Saturday, Oct 27, 2012, at Agrace HospiceCare. He was born on December 22, 1916, in Hampton, Iowa, the son of Henry and Louisa (Ahrens) Helvig. The family later moved to a farm near Eau Claire where he attended rural school, Eau Claire High School and the State College. He earned a B.S. degree in education. Robert taught elementary grades for ten years in Wisconsin schools. He was a member of the Northwest Wisconsin Teacher’s Association. He served in the Pacific Theatre during WWII with the 30th Bomb Group and the 7th Army Air Corps. Robert was a member of the 30th Bomb Group Association. He worked as an aide to Army Reserve units in Wisconsin at Fond du Lac, Sheboygan and Madison, and was a member of the Association of Retired Federal Employees. Robert was a member of the Bashford United Methodist Church and was active as a helper of the Food Pantry Program.

Robert is survived by a sister, Ruth Lyyski of Reno, Nev.; along with many nieces and a nephew. He was preceded in death by his parents; and four sisters, Anna, Viola, Lenora and Henrietta.

Funeral services will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL HOME, 5203 Monona Drive, Madison, at Noon, on Thursday, Nov. 1, 2012, with the Rev. Brenda Wingfield presiding. Visitation will be held from 11 a.m. until the time of the service on Thursday. Burial will be at Southern Wisconsin Veteran’s Memorial Cemetery, 21731 Spring St., Union Grove, WI 53182, with military rites being conducted.
