LA VALLE/MADISON-Renata Albertina Lucht passed away peacefully on September 4, 2016, at Agrace HospiceCare.
She was born in 1924 to Peter and Christina Lucht in La Valle WI, where she was joined by seven siblings on the family farm. Renata worked in Milwaukee before enlisting in the U.S. Women's Army Corp and served in Wales, Germany, and France from 1944-46, later serving in the Reserves. She was honored to be one of only a few woman Veterans to go on a Badger Honor Flight in 2013. Renata earned her bachelor's degree from Valparaiso University, later becoming an elementary school teacher in Fort Atkinson where she taught for ten years. She earned her Master of Library Science from the University of Wisconsin and for the next 16 years was a school librarian at Lowell Elementary in Madison.
Retirement allowed Renata to focus on those things she enjoyed most. As a world traveler, she explored Europe, visiting England, Germany, Denmark, Austria, Norway, and Switzerland. She took a trip to the Panama Canal and trekked to all 50 U.S. states, many more than once. Much of her traveling was done with the Elderhostel program (now known as Road Scholar) which filled her love for learning. Throughout her travels, Renata made many lifelong friends. While serving in Wales she was befriended by a family who became close not only to her but to her sister Louise's family. Renata also spent her retirement years volunteering - particularly at The House of Thrift (benefitting Bethesda Lutheran Home for the Developmentally Disabled), and the Arboretum. She loved nature, gardening and bird watching. She enjoyed classical music and regularly attended the UW Madison Symphony and other concerts. Her faith and church involvement was very important to her. She was a member of both Monona Lutheran Church and St. Paul's Lutheran Church in La Valle.
Her family meant a great deal to her – both past and present. With her remarkable memory, she was the family historian. Renata will be remembered as a wonderful sister and a loving aunt to her nieces and nephews. She will be missed by family and the many friends she made throughout her 92 years. Renata is survived by her sisters, Louise (Herman) Brandenburg and Marjory Preston; brother, William (Helen) Lucht; and five nieces and six nephews and their families. She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Edward, Leo, and John; sisters, Trudy and Leota; sisters-in-law, Patricia and Sarah; and nephew William, Jr.
A funeral service will be held at MONONA LUTHERAN CHURCH, 4411 Monona Dr., Monona, at 4 p.m., on Sunday, Sept 11, 2016. A second service will be held at ST. PAUL LUTHERAN CHURCH, E4198 St. Paul Rd., La Valle, at 1 p.m., on Sunday, Sept. 18, 2016, at which time the life of her brother John will also be remembered. A graveside service and luncheon will follow.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Monona Lutheran Church, 4411 Monona Drive, Monona, WI 53716; St. Paul's Lutheran Church, E4198 St. Paul Road, La Valle, WI 53941; or Friends of the Arboretum, 1207 Seminole Highway, Madison, WI 53711.
