Verona – Marjorie A. “Marge” Marty, age 84, died surrounded by her family on Monday, December 10, 2012 at St. Mary’s Hospital. She was born on June 4, 1928 in Madison, the daughter of Henry and Selma (Liebetrau) Maurer. She graduated from Verona High School and Whitewater Teacher’s College and taught one year at White School, in rural Verona.
Marge was united in marriage to Russell Marty on August 11, 1948 at St. James Lutheran Church, Verona. They farmed their entire married life on the Marty Century Homestead until 2009, when they sold their dairy herd.
Marge had an unwavering Christian faith and was a lifelong member of St. James Lutheran Church. She was very active in many church groups including, Ruth Circle, WELCA, Oakwood Service League and the Quilting Group. She also spent many years coordinating funeral lunches at St. James.
She was a member of the Gordon School Mother’s Club and a 4-H cooking leader for the Gordon Go-Getters.
Marge enjoyed playing cards especially with her friends of over 60 years, the 8 O’clock Callers and numerous neighborhood card groups. She also loved bowling and their up-North fishing trips with friends and family. Her favorite past-time was tending to her flower and vegetable gardens. She was happiest when she was out in the fresh air.
Her greatest joy was her family and her house was always the gathering place for get-togethers. She is survived by her 4 children: John (Cathie), Carla (Joe) Poast, Joanne (Greg) Kendall and Ron (Peggy); 10 grandchildren, Meghan (Julio Barros) Marty, Melissa (David) Snyder, Amanda Poast, Jordan (Erica) Poast, Sarah (Randy) Anderson, Elizabeth (Jeremy) Gleason, Joel Kendall, Mary (Dave) Neill, and Lisa and Jenna Marty; 7 great-grandchildren and another due in January; brothers, Ray (Shirley) and Len (Judy) Maurer; sister-in-law, Marilyn Maurer; and brothers and sisters-in-law, Paul and Dorothy Marty and Clarence and Ginny Witt.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Russ; her parents; and brother, Jerry Maurer.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 15, 2012 at St. James Lutheran Church, 427 S. Main Street, Verona, with Rev. Kurt Billings and Rev. Peter Narum officiating. Visitation will be held from 4-8 p.m. on Friday, December 14, 2012 at the Ryan Funeral Home, 220 Enterprise Drive, Verona and also from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service at the church on Saturday. Burial will be at Verona Cemetery.
