Joyce I. Barry, age 78, of Janesville died Thursday, Aug. 16, 2012, at Mercy Hospital and Trauma Center.
She was born on Aug. 22, 1933 in Barron County, the daughter of Lloyd and Frances (Hagen) Nelson. Joyce attended Whitehall High School and upon graduation, went to work for a phone company in Milwaukee. She moved to Janesville in 1954 and worked at Dr. Forrestal's dentist office. After staying home to raise her children she returned to work and found much satisfaction as a teacher's aide at Madison Elementary, where she worked for 15 years. Joyce married her soul mate, Dale, on Nov. 30, 1957, living in Orfordville for 11 years before moving to Janesville for good in 1969. Joyce was a devoted and longtime member of Faith Lutheran church, an active member of the Washington Elementary Breakfast Club, and a one-time member of the Y-Fore Golf League and the Puttin' Pals, where she demonstrated her putting prowess at the Friday Senior Scramble events at Blackhawk. She loved her weekly 'coffee clutch' sessions with her close friends, along with the monthly bridge games where the 'boobie prize' always seemed to have more value than the overall winner's prize. Despite a full plate of local activities to keep her busy, nothing pleased Joyce more than spending time with and traveling with her husband. She was Dale's No. 1 fan in the stands when he was coaching baseball and basketball, and after his retirement, they traveled often. A trip to Europe, a week in Branson, Mo. and the extended trips south to see her grandchildren were her favorites. Joyce was a fanatic Milwaukee Brewer fan, and in a fitting sendoff, the Brewer bullpen actually found a way to not blow a save on her last night. She also loved her Badgers and Packers, although she had a knack for changing the channel when things weren't going well.
Joyce is survived by her husband of 54 years, Dale, children Jackie (Ray) King, Jill (Doug) Smith and John (Polly) Barry, as well as her beloved grandchildren Olivia (Jake), Taylor, Alexandra, Paige, Preston, Trent and Tanner; and three brothers: Loren (Darlene), Burton (Cindy) and Donald (Mickey). She was preceded in death by her parents, brother Leonard, and sisters Helen and Beulah.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 22, 2012, at Faith Lutheran Church with Pastor David Nelsestuen officiating.
