John “Elton” Kies was born on December 16, 1923 to John W. and Lucille (Tracy) Kies in Belmont Township. He graduated from Potosi High School in 1941. Elton was united in marriage to Lucille Voigts on January 4, 1950 at the Peace Lutheran Church, Belmont. To this union four children were born.
He greatly valued family and is survived by: Rita and Dennis Noble, David and Susan Kies, Zeena and David Engelke, and Jean Kies and husband, Lew Wasserman.
Together, Elton and Lucille farmed south of Platteville. He was 4-H leader with the Blockhouse Builders f-H Club for 40 years; affiliated with Grant County Pork Producers; and a member of the Grant County Cattleman’s Association. Elton liked sports and visiting with old friends and neighbors. One of the highlights of each year was helping 4-H kids weigh and identify their beef steers for the Grant County Meat Animal Sale. Additionally, he enjoyed running “the gate” annually during the sale. He truly liked meeting and getting to know many of Grant County’s great young people. He was a member of the First English Lutheran Church, Platteville.
In addition to his wife and children, he is further survived by 10 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. He also is survived by two sisters, Betty Swart and Ila Sampson, special friends, George and Marie Mezera, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, and grandson, Kelly Kies.
The family wishes to thank Dr. Kevin Carr and the staff of SWHC in Cuba City for their exceptional care and dedication.
