OREGON-Jean B. (Knudsen) Griffith, age 84, passed away on Sunday, Nov. 11, 2012.
Jean was born on Nov. 27, 1927, on a farm in the township of Oregon, Dane County, to Roy and Lena (Larsen) Knudsen. She attended the McGlauphlin and Oregon grade schools and graduated from Oregon High School in May, 1945. Jean and Donald R. Griffith were married in St. John’s Lutheran Church in Oregon on Oct. 24, 1953. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 2003. Jean began work as a typist in August, 1945, at the Wisconsin School for Girls and advanced to secretary to the superintendent. She retired from that position in June, 1960, to raise her two sons. Jean began work at St. John’s Lutheran Church in August, 1968, as church secretary and worked there for 15 years. In January, 1985, she began work as a typist and computer operator at the Wisconsin Department of Transportation, Accident Section. Jean worked there for 16 years retiring in November, 2000. Jean enjoyed reading and working in her large flower garden. She enjoyed many sports and was a fan of the Chicago Cubs, Green Bay Packers, Wisconsin Badgers, auto racing (particularly the Indianapolis 500), professional golf, high school, college, and professional basketball, and the Olympics. Jean and Don were Boy Scout leaders for several years and Jean was a Cub Scout leader also. They hunted pheasants in South Dakota and deer in Wyoming. Jean and Don enjoyed taking vacation trips and traveled to Europe (Russia, Estonia, Finland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, West Germany) and throughout the United States (Alaska, Hawaii, California, Washington D.C., and many civil war areas in the Eastern United States). Jean was a life-long member of St. John’s Lutheran Church where she had been a Sunday school teacher, superintendent, member of the Education Committee, the Chancel Choir, Praise Singers Choir, Chime Choir, and music librarian for the choirs. She was a member and past Chairman of Sarah Circle.
Jean is survived by her sons, James and Dan, and her sister, Maureen Duckert. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Don.
Funeral services for Jean will be held at ST. JOHN’S LUTHERAN CHURCH, 625 East Netherwood St., Oregon, at 11 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 16, 2012. Burial will be at Prairie Mound Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the church from 9 a.m. until the time of service. Memorial contributions may be made to the St. John’s Lutheran Church music fund.
