James W. Heer, 91, of Platteville died on Tuesday, March 26, 2013, at Manor Care Health Services, Platteville.
Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, March 30, 2013 at the Melby Funeral Home & Crematory, Platteville. Pastor Elizabeth Whitford will officiate. Burial will be at the Whig Cemetery, rural Platteville. Friends may call from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. Friday at the Melby Funeral Home & Crematory, Platteville, or from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service on Saturday at the funeral home. Jim was born on July 25, 1921 in Harrison Twp., Grant County the son of Christian and Ella (Russell) Heer. He was united in marriage to Charlotte Keehner on June 10, 1944 at the Presbyterian Church, Lancaster. Jim was a lifelong farmer in Harrison Twp. he also drove bus for many years for Weisse & Enders Bus Service driving for the Twin Platte rural school. Jim was a member of the Whig United Methodist Church, where he also served on the Whig Cemetery Board for many years. He was a member of Farm Bureau, Southwest Wisconsin Auto Club, and he served on the Harrison Township board. Jim and Charlotte helped in the voting polls in Harrison Twp. for over 50 years. They belonged to the same card club for over 50 years where he enjoyed playing 500 and Euchre. Jim enjoyed playing baseball, softball, fishing, and later playing golf. Jim could always be seen at his kids and grandchildren sporting and school activities.
He is survived by his wife of over 68 years, Charlotte; four sons, James (Susan) Heer of Cumming, GA; Richard (Karen) Heer of Platteville; Michael (Cheryl) Heer of Cuba City; Larry (Patti) Heer of Platteville; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren with two more on the way; four sisters, Genevieve Olson and Marion Knutson both of Platteville; Marie Hahn of Denver, CO; Elizabeth (Doug) Davies of Lancaster; two sisters-in-law, Betty Heer of Monroe, WI; and Arlene Heer of Fennimore, WI; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, and aunt, Mary Heer, brothers, David, John and Ralph, sister, Ruth Nodolf, brothers-in-law, Kenneth Olson, Robert Knutson, LaVerne “Shorty” Nodolf, and Jim Hahn.
