Harland George Watrud, 93 years young and an 89 year resident of Blanchardville died on Saturday evening, September 10, 2016. He was born on June 19, 1923 near Blanchardville to George & Martha (Lehnherr) Watrud. He attended the Blanchardville Grade School, and graduated from the Blanchardville High School in the class of 1941. On March 1, 1927 his family moved into the house that he would call home for the rest of his life. Harland’s father operated the Watrud Service Station. Harland and his brother Robert worked there while growing up, taking over the station in 1942. Their father was pressed back into running things during World War II when the boys were serving their country. Harland served in the Army Air Core. He was proud of the small community of Blanchardville, always willing to share a story or two about Blanchardville’s history. Harland and Marie Jenks were married on June 26, 1948. They raised 4 children. Harland was an avid golfer, wood worker and auto and bicycle mechanic. The Watrud Service Station was a local hang out for many Blanchardville people and family friends. Harland shared his dry humor and wit with them all, including many practical jokes. Harland and Marie also loved to travel, including family camping trips, and many Tri-State Tours. In 1990 the time came to close the service station and for the brothers to fully retire. Harland was a member of the Dobson-Johnson American Legion Post, and the Blanchardville Lutheran Church which recently became New Hope. He was also a member of the Blanchardville Businessman’s Association which started the Father’s Day Chicken BBQ, and later became the Chamber of Commerce.

Harland is survived by four children, Anna Marie (Orville) Olson of Dodgeville, Allen (Martha) Watrud of Middleton, Arlene Krueger of Madison, and Glen (Gloria) Watrud of Brodhead; seven grandchildren, Amy (William) Barnes, Matthew (Stephanie) Watrud, Damon (Ashley) Krueger, Kjersten (Jason) Hayes, Lindsey (Steve) Witt, Erik Krueger, and Elizabeth (Andy) Dresang; and 11 great-grandchildren.
