Gloria J. Sens, 76, of Platteville, died on Tuesday, December 4, 2012 at UW-Hospitals in Madison.
Services will be on Saturday, December 15, 2012 at the Melby-Bendorf Funeral Home & Crematory, Platteville. There will be visitation from 1:00 – 2:00 p.m. with a time of sharing and remembrance from 2:00 until 4:00 p.m. The Melby-Bendorf Funeral Home & Crematory, Platteville is serving the family. Gloria was born on June 12, 1936 in Kansas City, MO, the daughter of Ulysses and Jane (Landrum) Squier. Her family moved to Los Angeles, California between 1936-37. Gloria was educated in Los Angeles City Schools, graduating from Hollywood High School in June of 1954. She married James F. Sens in 1958; they divorced in 1978. Gloria went on to get her B.S. in Education at Ohio University in Athens, Ohio in 1963 and her MST in 1978 from University of Wisconsin-Platteville, where she also audited history, French, and art history courses after her retirement in 1998 from teaching. She began teaching in 1963 at Jefferson High, Jefferson Wisconsin, while her husband was at graduate school at University of Wisconsin Madison, working toward a Ph.D in history. She committed to teaching after the birth of her son Philip. She taught at Lancaster Junior High from 1970-1998. Her interests include current events, travel, reading, learning, music, architecture, and tennis. She founded the League of Women Voters of Platteville in 2005.
She is survived by her son, Phil of Middleton; brother, Gerald L. Squier of Visalia, CA; two nephews, Jeremy and Brandon. She was preceded in death by her parents; and ex-husband in 2002.
