Eva L. Sturdevant Kraak, 88, of Avoca died Tuesday, June 19, 2012 at the UW Hospital in Madison, due to injuries sustained from a fall. Eva was born April 11, 1924 in Pulaski Township in Iowa County the daughter of William and Maria (Kurtz) Kraak. With the exception of 18 years, Eva lived her entire life in the Avoca/Muscoda area. After graduating from Muscoda High School 1943, she worked at Ray-O-Vac (Madison), until her enlisted in the Women’s Army Corp in May 1944, serving 2 years in London, Paris, and the USA. Eva worked at the University of Wisconsin-Purchasing; Wisconsin Motor Vehicle Department; and Ohio Medical before returning to Avoca in 1973. She served as Clerk/Treasurer of Avoca for several years. Eva married Virgil Sturdevant on April 8, 1950 in Dubuque, Iowa. He preceded her in death on November 20, 1994. Eva was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church where she served 11 years as treasurer and 4 years as president of the WELCA. She was also a member of the American Legion 335, VFW 8244, and 37 year member of the Legion Auxiliary.

Eva is survived by her children: Susan (Larry) Alt of Avoca, Warren Sturdevant of Brodhead;

4 grandchildren: Jason Sturdevant of Avoca, Davina (Chad) Meckley of Avoca, Jeff Sturdevant of Monroe, Katie Sturdevant of Monticello; 4 great-grandchildren: Cody, Ashley and Addison (her princess) Meckley, and Elizabeth Krause all of Avoca, her special Yttri nieces and nephews as well as many other nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. 

The family would like to thank the staff of Golden Living Center, Riverdale for taking care of Eva these past few months. Also, to the staff of the Richland Hospital, UW Hospital, Neuro ICU nurses and doctors, and the palliative care team for taking such great care of Eva during her hospitalization. Thank you for all your care, thoughts and reassurances these last few weeks. You are all truly amazing!

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, June 27, 2012 at 11:00 AM at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Avoca with Reverend Steven Schneider officiating. Burial will follow in the Avoca Cemetery where military graveside rites will be provided. Friends may call at the Godager Pratt Funeral Home on Tuesday, June 26, 2012 from 4:00 PM until 7:00 PM and on Wednesday, June 27, 2012 at the church from 10:00 AM until 11:00 AM. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the family. The Godager Pratt Funeral Home of Muscoda is assisting the family with their arrangements.
