MADISON-Donald Niva, age 82, of Madison, passed away on Friday, August 10, 2012. He was born on Mar. 28, 1930, in Madison, the son of Harold and Mary (Macieg) Niva. Donald married Joan Lund on July 18, 1951. He served in the U.S. Army in Germany during the Korean Conflict. Donald was an amateur heavyweight boxer while in the military at Fort Sill. He worked for the State of Wisconsin Department of Transportation, the Division of Tourism, and the University Housing Department. Donald was a square dance caller and teacher, active in Boots and Slippers, Westport Squares, and Triangle Squares in Lake Mills. Donald loved gardening, walking the dogs, and biking. He loved the outdoors and camping with his family.
Donald is survived by his children, Greg (Lynne), Steve (Trinette Kelly), Kathy, and James (Ginger) and grandchildren, Matthew, Alex, Michael, and Nicholas. He was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Joan, on Jan. 29, 2012.
Funeral services will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL HOME, 5203 Monona Dr., Madison, at 12 p.m. on Tuesday, August 14, 2012, with Father Kent Schmitt presiding. Burial will be in Roselawn Memorial Park. Visitation will be at the funeral home from 10 a.m. until the time of service on Tuesday. Memorials may be directed to the American Heart Association.
