The life's work of a family man, patriot and public servant ended peacefully on August 8, 2012 at his home surrounded by his family. Allen Hulett (age 90) was born on December 29, 1921 in Whitehall, WI, son of Arthur and Margaret Hulett. He married Helen Stendahl on April 6, 1946 and had 5 children. He later married Marlene Smith on April 13, 1984.
Allen grew up on a farm and had a great work ethic, supporting and mentoring his family throughout his life. Allen joined the Navy three days after graduating from Taylor High School in 1940. He was assigned to various ships including the Battleship U.S.S. Arkansas during World War II and was ultimately promoted to Chief Petty Officer. A life-long public servant, he served as Fire Chief of the Pewaukee WI, Maple Bluff WI, Oak Lawn IL, and Elk Grove IL Fire Departments and as well as a civil defense director for the State of Wisconsin and fire service advisor for Saudi Arabia. During his lifetime he corresponded with Eleanor Roosevelt and met Winston Churchill during WWII. Allen enjoyed making latch hook rugs for his children, grandchildren and friends. He won several awards on his rugs and even personally presented one of his rugs to the Prime Minister of Iceland. Allen’s passion was helping his family first and the fire service and the Navy.
Allen is survived by his first wife Helen, Oregon WI, daughters, Mary (Bob) Landeck, Sister Bay WI, Fay (John) Gaukel, Oregon WI, Lana Zimmer, Houston TX, and Sue Hulett, Fort Dodge IA, and son Kent (Donna) Hulett, Rockford, IL. Also survived by grandchildren Eric (Phyllis) Gaukel, Tricia (Tory) McNeil, Lindsey (Bill) Keppel, Jeffrey Hulett, Janessa (Anders) Fremstad, Jillian Landeck, Jeanna (Jeremy) Moegenburg, Jayden Landeck, Kelsey Riley, Kendra Riley, Charlie Riley II U.S.N. and great grandchildren, Phyllis Rae and Eric Gaukel Jr., Allyson McNeil, Kylie Keppel, and Auden, Finian, and Annika Fremstad, step children, Mary (Allan) Foss, Bob (Terry) Smith, Rebecca Smith, Bonnie (Karl) Trapp , Kim(Ed) Duncan, step-grandchildren Taylor Trapp, Lucus, Tyler, and Jack Smith, Jamie Duncan, Emily Siegle, brother Vernon (Alice)Hulett, Taylor, WI and sister Darlene (Bob) Karr, Douglasville, GA. Allen was preceded in death by his parents, second wife Marlene, grandson Daniel Zimmer and sister Marion (Ray) LaPointe. Allen's family would like to thank Karen, Carol, Darci and Adrienne from Comfort Keepers, the staff of the V.A. hospital, Agrace Hospice, Pastor Karl Hermanson and the eternal friendship from Master Chief, Denny Behr (USNR) for their kindness, care and compassion.
