Shirley Marie Martell

Shirley Marie (Snyder) Martell, age 86, of Dodgeville departed peacefully on July 13, 2013 at the Upland Hills Hospital in Dodgeville.

She was born on May 29, 1927 in Avoca, WI to Walter & Della (Wonn) Snyder. She grew up in Avoca, and attended school there, graduating from Avoca High School in 1945. She was married on June 27, 1953 in Avoca to Dr. John S. Martell. They moved to Dodgeville where John (Jack) began his dental practice, until retiring in 1999. Shirley was a homemaker, raising three sons, while also helping at the dental office.

Shirley's greatest passions were bridge-playing and quilting. She also enjoyed needlework, crochet, and golf. She was a former member of Eastern Star, church circle, and at one time directed the children's choir at Dodgeville United Methodist Church, where she was an active member.

She was devoted to her family, especially her grandchildren, and always made Christmas a very special time for the family to gather.

John & Shirley celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in June with family and friends.

Shirley is survived by her husband, John; three sons, Steve (Karen) Martell of Sapphire, North Carolina Mike (Sue) Martell of Roseville, Minnesota and Jeff (Linda) Martell of Bettendorf, Iowa; 7 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; 3 sisters, Marjorie (Vilas) Bursack of West Bend, Carol Dettl of Allen, Michigan and Katherine (Marshall) Melgard of Pewaukee; and numerous nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers Glen, Robert & Norbert, and nephew Joel Dettl.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, July 20, 2013 at 11:00 am at the Dodgeville United Methodist Church. A lunch will follow the funeral at the church. A private family burial will follow at the Avoca Cemetery. Friends may call Saturday morning from 10:00 am until the time of the service at the church.

The Lulloff -Peterson-Houck Funeral Home in Dodgeville is assisting the family.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Dodgeville United Methodist Church.

The family wishes to thank Shirley's doctors and the staff at CrestRidge Assisted Living for their care and support.
