Ruth J. Stream

WAUNAKEE-Ruth J Stream passed away on May 3, 2014. She was born on March 17, 1925 to Harvey and Hattie (Rambo) Polzin.

She was the valedictorian of her high school class of 1942 in Plainfield. Her love of music drew her to attend U.W. School of Music in Milwaukee along with Chicago and Madison schools. She married the love of her life, Winston Stream on September 2, 1944 and raised five children which were her first priority. Her smiles, unconditional love, sense of humor, support and constant encouragement were cherished by her family and friends.

She worked for the State of Wisconsin DILHR for many years; finally retiring in her mid 70's. She enjoyed her work because it kept her in contact with people and challenges.

She was a founding member of Sherman Avenue United Methodist church where she was both the organist and pianist for 52 years. She also played for many weddings and funerals. In recent years she enjoyed being part of a chorale group where she lived. Her gifted hands not only allowed her to teach organ and piano to many wonderful students. Her gardening skills (green thumb) produced endless bounties of food and flowers that she always shared with family, friends and neighbors. Whatever vegetables remained would be preserved to use and share for future meals. She loved gifting baked goods as well and was known for her mincemeat, homemade bread and fabulous cinnamon rolls! There was always an open door policy in her home to offer a meal, an ear or a hug to those who needed which including friends of her children who didn't have a happy home. She was a great listener who always had an interest in other people's concerns, and never hesitated to provide others with encouragement. Her compassion shined through when she would befriend those who others would not. She had the ability to find the good in others and make the most of difficult situations. She always did things well and never asked for much in return. When life's hard knocks came around she was able to rally and not let it diffuse her love of life. She enjoyed camping with friends for over 35 years.

She was also a member of the Waunakee Red Hatters. She had a keen eye and knack for finding treasures, especially antique toys, at garage sales, antique shops and flea markets. She enjoyed finding things that she or someone else might enjoy. She was a wonderful mother and mother-in-law. She was a strong, fun loving, joyful, kind, generous, compassionate and amazing woman who was truly full of grace and remained a kid at heart even into her last days!

Ruth is survived by her children: Michael Stream, Peter (Mary) Stream, Jenny (Bill) Magli, Bruce Stream; grandchildren, Jonathon (Alma) Stream, Kurt (Gretchen) Stream, and Melissa (Josh Grimes) Stream; great-grandchildren Evangelina, Samuel, and Hosanna Stream; her siblings Eugene (Bonnie) Polzin, and Douglas (Anita) Polzin; special friend, Barb Zanoni and many relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Winston; her parents; her son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Gwen Stream; her sisters, Carol Odeen, and Rosemary Schumann; her brother, John Polzin; and favorite feline companion, Blackie.

Special thanks to Agrace HospiceCare, Meriter E.R. and Oakwood Village West for their attentive care; and to the members of Sherman Avenue United Methodist Church for their thoughtfulness and compassion.
