VERONA/MADISON – Paul R. Marty, age 83, passed away at his home on Tuesday, December 10, 2013.
Paul was born on the family farm on May 17, 1930 to Carl and Emma (Rhiner) Marty.
He attended Gordon School, a one-room school house, later graduating from Verona High School in 1948. In high school, Paul lettered in boxing, football, baseball, and basketball; he holds the record for the most points scored in a basketball game before more recent rule changes.
Paul married his high school sweetheart, Dorothy Sweeney, on August 11, 1951 at St. Andrew Catholic Church in Verona. He enlisted in the US Navy in December of 1951; while serving, he continued boxing and played for the Navy All-Star Softball Team.
After being honorably discharged, Paul worked at MURA, University of Wisconsin Computer Center, and American Family Insurance, where he was an agent in Verona more than 30 years. Paul played for the Verona Home Talent Baseball team for many years. He was a member of the Verona American Legion Mason-Lindsay Post 385, a leader of the Gordon Go-Getters 4-H Club, and was a president on the St. Andrew Catholic Church Council.
He was especially proud of his Swiss heritage. Paul loved the outdoors, especially golfing, fishing, hunting, and trap shooting with his family and friends; he passed his passion on to his nephews and grandsons. He was a life-time member of the Dane County Conservation League, board member of the Ruffed Grouse Society, and a founding member of The Sugar River Ducks Unlimited Verona Chapter.
Paul is survived by his wife of 62 years, Dorothy; children, Pat (Michael) Ehly, Nancy (Steve) Bollig, and Jean (Gary Cannalte) Marty; grandchildren, Mikaela & Mitch Ehly, Tyler (Whitney) Knudtson, Jackson & Wyatt Bollig, and Charlie Cannalte; sister, Virginia (Clarence) Witt; sister-in-law, Mary Hefty; brother-in-law, Leo Sweeney, and many nieces, nephews and life-long friends. Also survived by his hunting Labrador Retriever, Max.
Preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Art (Darlyn) & Russ (Marge); sister, Kathryn (Greg) Tierney.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at ST. ANDREW CATHOLIC CHURCH, 301 N. Main Street, Verona, at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, December 14, 2013, with Father William Vernon presiding. Visitation will be held at RYAN FUNERAL HOME, 220 Enterprise Drive, Verona, on Friday, December 13, 2013 from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Burial with full military honors will follow at St. Andrew Catholic Cemetery.
