Jerry F. "Cookie" Cook, 74, of Platteville died on Tuesday, May 14, 2013 at Gray's Nursing Home, Platteville.
Funeral services will be 3:00 p.m. Sunday, May 19. 2013 at the Melby Funeral Home & Crematory, Platteville. Pastor Mary Ann Floerke is officiating. Burial will be at Hillside Cemetery, Platteville, where military rites will be accorded by American Legion Post #42 and VFW Post #5274. Friends may call from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. Saturday at the Melby Funeral Home & Crematory, Platteville, or from 2:00 p.m. until the time of the service on Sunday at the funeral home. Jerry was born on December 18, 1938 in Platteville, Wisconsin, the son of Forrest and Martha (Marcue) Cook. He was united in marriage to Phyllis Austin on June 16, 1956 at First English Lutheran Church, Platteville. He served in the United States Air Force from 1956 – 1960. "Cookie" worked for 33 years at John Deere Dubuque Works retiring in 1993. He worked many years working for UAW Local 94 where he was a union representative. With that he resolved grievances and negotiated contracts. With this responsibility he traveled extensively throughout the United States helping fellow members. Jerry also served many terms as UAW Local 94 Chairman. After his retirement he worked as a crossing guard for the City of Platteville. He enjoyed coaching little league baseball, the outdoors, where he liked to fish, hunt, and camp. Jerry especially enjoyed following all of his grandchildren in all of their school activities and attending their school and sports events.
He is survived by his wife, Phyllis; four children, Terry (Jim) Burbach of Platteville; Shelly Lancaster of Platteville; Greg (Julie White) Cook of Montfort, WI; Chris (Todd) Kirschbaum of Prescott, WI; ten grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; one brother, Ron (Barb) Cook of Platteville; one sister, Colleen Spease of Ellenboro, WI; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, son-in-law, Bruce Lancaster, brothers, Merlyn, Dariel, Gary, and Lonnie and sisters, Doreen Stephens and Zee Cook.
