James J. "Jim" Newton
FALL RIVER—James J. “Jim” Newton age 74, died unexpectedly on Saturday, May 4, 2013 in Naples, FL.
He was born on August 8, 1938 in Wabeno, the son of Floyd and Clara (LaRock) Newton. Jim was a 1957 graduate of Wabeno High School and attended Wood County Teacher’s College in Wisconsin Rapids. While there, he met Viorene Towle to whom he was married on August 19, 1961.
Jim was a graduate of UW-Oshkosh receiving his bachelor’s degree in education. He first taught at Marcellon School in Pardeeville where he was also the principal. Jim taught middle school science classes in Columbus for 30 years where he was known for startling students with science demonstrations that ended with an unexpected big bang. He retired from teaching in 1998. Jim loved the outdoors, whether it was hunting, fishing, or just relaxing at the cottage in Wabeno. He especially enjoyed fishing on Lake Michigan. Jim was a master safety instructor for the DNR for 30 years. He was a member of the Elks Club and lived to serve others in many ways.
Survivors include his son, John (Sue) of Fall River; his daughter, Laura (Brent) Maron of Beaver Dam; his three grandchildren, Samantha Newton, Colton Maron and Maya Maron, of whom he was especially proud, cherishing the times spent with them; one sister, Dolores Uphoff of Laona; one brother, Robert Newton of Mt. Pleasant, NC; a sister-in-law, Genevieve Newton of Shawano; companion, Linda Swanson of Sun Prairie; other relatives and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Vi in 2003; three brothers and their wives, Floyd Jr. (Priscilla), Millard (Betty), Clarence; a sister-in-law, Miriam Newton.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:30 A.M. on Friday, May 10, 2013 at ST JEROME CATHOLIC CHURCH, Columbus. Rev. Steve Kortendick will officiate. Inurnment will be in St. Ambrose Catholic Cemetery, Wabeno. Visitation will be from 4:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. on Thursday at the funeral home, and from 10:30 A.M. until 11:30 A.M. on Friday at the church.
