J. Bernard Lee

J. Bernard Lee, age 91, of Monroe, died on Wednesday, May 15, 2013 in Monroe.

He was born December 19, 1921, the son of Thomas and Lillian (Quinn) Lee. He graduated from St. Victor Parochial School in 1936 and from Monroe High School in 1940.

He was inducted into the Army September 11, 1942 at Fort Sheridan, IL. He was sent to Fort Benjamin Harrison, IN for basic training during which time he was awarded an Expert Rifleman Medal. He was selected to attend the Army Finance School, also at Fort Harrison. Upon completing the required accounting courses, he was sent overseas to the Southwest Pacific area in April, 1943 and assigned to General MacArthur's Headquarters in the G-2 Intelligence Section. He served in Australia, New Guinea, Dutch New Guinea and the Philippines, achieving the rank of Tech Sergeant. On July 11, 1945, he was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for meritorious service by Major General C. A. Willoughby, Assistant Chief of Staff, G-2. He was discharged at Fort Leonard Wood, MO on October 31, 1945.

On May 20, 1950, he married Janice Gibbons in St. Victor Catholic Church.

Bernard was a Past Grand Knight of Monroe Knights of Columbus Council #1471 and also was an insurance representative for the K. of C. Supreme Council. Prior to that he was a partner in the Monroe Firestone Store. In later years he was the Accounting Supervisor at Moore Business Forms, retiring on January 1, 1987.

He enjoyed bowling and golf. He was a member of the Monroe Country Club and earned many top trophies. His bowling accomplishments were numerous, including achieving the coveted 700 series and nearly bowling a perfect game, missing one pin in the final frame of the American Bowling Congress Finals. He was also a member of the American Legion Post #84.

He was preceded in death by his wife in 2006 and mother in 1992.

He is survived by his son James (Monica), Chicago and three grandchildren, Michael, Melinda and Mitchell Lee.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, May 18, 2013, at 10:30 a.m., at St. Clare of Assisi Parish at St. Victor Catholic Church with Father Larry Bakke, Celebrant. Interment will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Monroe. Visitation will be at the church on Saturday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service. Memorials may be given toward Masses at St. Victors.
