MADISON- Grace A. Vitale, age 87, reunited with her husband, Joe, on Saturday, March 1, 2014.

She suffered several years with Alzheimer’s, which finally led to her death.

Grace was born in Cleveland, Ohio, on July 12, 1926 to Joseph and Pauline Ferrante. As a junior she quit school to be the caretaker of her ailing father. After her father’s death she met Joe who had stopped to pay his respect to the family on his way home from the war. Both of their families were friends and came from the same town in Sicily.

She married the love of her life, Joseph Vitale, on September 7, 1946 at St. Cecelia Catholic Church in Cleveland. After moving to Madison, they started their family in the Green Bush area, living in the family homestead on Lake Street. Joe’s mother Mary became her best friend. Grace’s first job was working at Baron’s Tea Room as hostess.

Once they moved to Monona, Grace found work at several restaurants as hostess or waitress, notably the Colonial Inn and the Stardust. Eventually Joe and Grace ran the Nibble Nook Restaurant on East Washington Ave. She enjoyed working with Joe until his passing in 1999, as security officers at Dean Clinic Fish Hatchery and as crossing guards at Lake View Elementary School. Eventually after his death Grace returned to the Clinic as a greeter.

Two of Grace’s greatest joys were dancing and cooking. No one ever went hungry at her table. She was famous for her spaghetti and meatballs! Grace loved her family, especially her 4 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren, more than life itself. Grace was always there for anyone in need. She never met a person that she didn’t instantly like.

Grace is survived by her children, Mary (Patrick) Kinney and Paula (Daniel) Rodefeld; grandchildren, Cori, Aric, Joseph and Jason; great-grandchildren, Annika, Jack, Hanna, Christian, Logan, Ava, Grayson, Cooper and Giada; sister, Marie Vinceguerra of Columbus,Ohio. Further survived by many nieces and nephews and other family and friends. Preceded in death by her husband; parents; and 11 siblings.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at ST. JOHN THE BAPTIST CATHOLIC CHURCH, 209 South Street, Waunakee, at 11:00 AM on Thursday, March 6, 2014, with Monsignor James Gunn presiding. Visitation will be held at the church from 10:00 AM until time of the Mass on Thursday. Burial at Resurrection Catholic Cemetery.

A special thanks to Dr. Robert Boyle, the staff of Sylvan Crossing, and Agrace Hospice for their wonderful care and love over the years. Grace has left a lasting impression on all that had the pleasure of meeting her and will be truly missed by her family and friends.
