Elsie Pearl McElmurry

MADISON- Elsie V. McElmurry, age 99, passed away on March 25, 2014 at UW Hospital after a brief illness.

She was born on September 27, 1914, in the Town of Wheaton, Chippewa Co., the third of four surviving children of Raymond and Minnie VanDalsem.

She worked for board and room in order to go to high school from 1928-1932. She started Eau Claire State Teachers College in the last semester of high school. She was the first of 38 cousins to graduate from high school. She graduated from Eau Claire State Teachers College in June of 1932. After difficulty in finding a rural teaching position, she worked at Luther Hospital in 1932 and 1933 as a nurse's aide. In 1934, she came down to Madison to attend the U.W. She worked for board and room. She also worked at the Campus Soda Grill.

She married Clarence A. "Mac" McElmurry in August 1936 in Buffalo, N.Y., and settled in Madison to raise their family. She was an active member of First Baptist Church, and was especially involved in children's work. She found great enjoyment doing ceramics, teaching a class; enjoying many long term relationships from it.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters; and one brother and their spouses; her husband of 60 years; two daughters, Marian and Nancy; and all of her cousins.

She is survived by her sons, Don (Joyce) of Portland, OR, Bob of Portachuelo, Bolivia, Brian (Nancy) of Mounds View, MN; her daughters, Ellen and Kathy of Madison; eight grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren; as well as several nieces and nephews and their descendants.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, March 31, 2014, at FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH, 518 N. Franklin Ave., with the Rev. Mark M. Clinger presiding. Burial will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park. A visitation will be held on Sunday, March 30, 2014, from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. at JOYCE-RYAN FUNERAL HOME, 5701 Odana Road, and also from 10 a.m. until the time of service at the church on Monday.

Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church.
