DeForest – Edwin J. Kraemer, age 95 of Spring Green and DeForest, WI.,passed away on July 23, 2014 at the VA Hospital Hospice wing, Madison, WI.
He was born on the family farm in Wyoming Valley on July 28, 1918 to John L. and Isabell Kraemer(nee Hutter). His mother died when Edwin was 1 years & 7 months old. His father remarried in 1926. Edwin attended the Knobs Grade School and Spring Green High School. He worked on the family farm until 1938 when he began working on his brother Rueben’s farm. Later he worked for Jack Smith. To earn extra income, Ed chopped and hauled cord wood. One of his customers was Frank Lloyd Wright whose farm was a mile & a half away.
When WWII broke out Edwin was working in Madison at Madison Kipp. Though he was engaged to C.Marie Burns at the time, Edwin volunteered for the Army in May 1943. He served in K Company, 141st Infantry Regiment. Edwin was a heavy artillery specialist. At the first Battle of Monte Casino near Naples, Italy, Edwin was taken prisoner by the Germans on 23 January 1944 and sent to Stalag 2B near Hammerstein, Germany and then out to a work camp 1680 near Jastrowie, Poland. Approximately 15 months later, as the Russians approached their camp, the Germans using the POW’s as protective cover marched the men 643 miles in the snow and rain to freedom in May 1945. Edwin received the Bronze Star, the Purple Heart & European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medals.
Edwin and C.Marie Burns were united in marriage on 26 January 1946 at St.Raphael’s Cathedral, Madison, WI. They lived their entire married life in Spring Green. From the spring of 1948 to December 1963 he worked for Ed Kraemer & Sons running big quarry shovels. In 1964 Edwin worked in Madison for the John Dahl Co. as a carpenter, and from March 1965 through December 1983 Edwin worked for Kraemer Brothers, Inc. of Plain, WI. as a sky track and crane operator. Edwin and Marie raised their family at 316 Jefferson Street and then to accommodate a growing family, in 1955 they built a home at 424 N. Winsted St. Edwin, along with Marie, provided a loving home for their six children and grandson, David. They with the help of sons Jim and Larry and grandson, David Ran the family’s 10,000 bird chicken ranch for 15 ½ years. He enjoyed a game of pinochle and euchre with family and friends and 500 with the Zeiers. He was a long time member of American Legion Post #253 in Spring Green, VFW, Eastside Businessman Club,St.John’s Catholic Church in Spring Green and St. Olaf’s Catholic Church in DeForest. Edwin also was a great sports fan of the Packers, Brewers and Badgers.
Ed enjoyed maintaining the Hilltop Resort and mowing the lawn at the Greenway Nursing Home in Spring Green; work he continued until abt. 2000. He always had a vegetable garden which he shared with friends and family. From 1995 until her death in 2001 Edwin was the sole caregiver of his late wife, Marie. January 26, 2001 marked would have their 55th wedding anniversary.
In September 2001 Edwin met Angeline AckerSchlub at a Madison Catholic Diocese event for widows and widowers and May 31, 2002 Edwin and Angie were united in Marriage at St.Olaf’s Catholic Church, DeForest, WI.
Edwin will be deeply missed by his family and friends, his wife of 12 years, Angie, his six children, B.Ann Neviaser, Madison; Evelyn Cummings, Fitchburg; Jacqueline Madl, Lannon; James E.(B.J.) Kraemer, Madison, Lawrence (Kim) Kraemer, Madison, and Marian Lins(Tom), DeForest, WI; stepsons GarySchlub(Theresa) DeForest, GregorySchlub (Lucy) DeForest and Dean Schlub.
Grandchildren, David (Lisa)Smith, Melissa Harrison (Matthew);Kristine Cummings, Ross (Sarah) Cummings, Nicholas Kraemer, Matthew Madl, Angela Marie& Daniel Kraemer, Pamela (Blake) Teutschmann, Mark & David Lins, step children Darcy, Corina, Adam, Abra, Alex Schlub; and Great grandchildren, Jordan & Lauren Smith, Tate, Haley Grace, Jacob, & Sam Harrison, Aidan & Liam Teutschmann, & Finn Lins; sisters, Helene and Rosemary; brothers Jerry and John.
Edwin was preceded in death by his first wife C.Marie on January 7, 2001, his mother, Isabell Hutter on February 26, 1921, his father, John L. on June 13, 1988, infant sister Caroline in 1912, brothers Reynold on February 1, 1999, Rueben on September 22, 1995, half sisters Marie Ahern on November 17, 1988, Dorothy Moore on March 16, 1994, Alice Kraemer on December 18, 1986 & brother Cletus on November 2, 2001.
Edwin’s family wants to give a very special thank you to the VA Hospice staff for the kind, attentive care given to their father and husband.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at ST OLAF CATHOLIC CHURCH, 623 Jefferson St, DeForest, WI, at 11:00 AM on Saturday, July 26, 2014, with Father Robert Butz officiating. Visitation will be held at the church from 10:00 AM until the time of the Mass on Saturday. Burial at St. Olaf Catholic Cemetery.
