Carl R. Lucas, age 97, of Dodgeville, formerly of Cobb, passed away on Monday, August 19, 2013 at Upland Hills Nursing & Rehab in Dodgeville.
Carl, the son of Adolph and Emma (Novak) Lucas was born on September 28, 1915 in Eden Township. He graduated from Cobb High School in 1934 and was an avid athlete and participated in basketball, baseball and boxing. Later, he loved to umpire local softball and baseball games. Upon graduating High School, he began farming which he continued his entire life.
He married Marjorie Hughes of the Welsh Settlement, near Mifflin on June 5, 1939 in Highland WI. They continued to farm in the Cobb area for 70 years before moving to Sienna Crest Assisted Living in Dodgeville in 2009. Carl was instrumental in bringing Iowa-Grant High School's first AFS student to the U.S. in 1967 and together he and Marjorie opened their home to three AFS students. Carl continued with the local chapter of AFS for many years.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his siblings, Clarence, Earl, Alice, Elsie, Glen and Harry and two grandchildren, James and John Wienkers.
Carl is survived by his wife, Marjorie of Dodgeville; three daughters, Carolyn (Robert Blotz of New Berlin; Wanda (Jerry) Wienkers of Kenosha and Marjean (Jay) Kraemer of Madison; eight grandchildren, Tim (Susan) Blotz; Doug (Lori) Blotz; Mike (Caroline) Blotz; Brian Wienkers; Laurel Wienkers; Diane (Kurt) Bergendahl; Jeremy (Emily) Kraemer and Joey (Nicole) Kraemer; nine great grandchildren; as well as nieces, nephews and friends.
Memorial services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, August 28, 2013 at the Lulloff-Peterson-Houck Funeral Home in Dodgeville. Pastor Gary Benzschawel will officiate with inurnment in Calvary Cemetery in Cobb. Friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday after 9:30 A.M.
