Marcella L Hronscikoski
Marcella Hroscikoski, 90 years old, died peacefully on Saturday, March 16, 2013 after a long suffering with heart failure and severe arthritis.
She was born at home on December 7, 1922 to Dysart, Iowa farmers Wesley and Ella (Schmidt) Lindeman, the middle of three girls. After receiving her teaching degree from Iowa State Teacher’s College in Cedar Falls, IA, she migrated with her elder sister Pauline to teach in Superior, AZ, and then moved to CA. While teaching home economics at Colton High School, Marcy fell in love with the business teacher, Raymond Hroscikoski. On June 14, 1952, they married at the Church of the Immaculate Conception in Colton. School rules did not allow married couples teaching in the same school, so Ray taught in the Burbank Schools while Marcy began working at home as mom to their four children that arrived in the next six years. They lived in Sunland, CA, for forty-one years, from 1953-1994, as members of Our Lady of Lourdes Church. When her youngest daughter was a toddler, Marcy returned to substitute teaching. In 1969 she again became a full-time home economics teacher at Richard E. Byrd Junior High School in Sun Valley, CA.
After her retirement in 1981, she and Ray enjoyed camping and fishing throughout the U.S. and traveling to visit far-flung children, extended family and friends in their fifth-wheel trailer. They reveled in journeys throughout Europe and Asia. When grandchildren began appearing in IA and WI, Marcy and Ray moved to Lake Redstone in LaValle, WI to be closer to them. They loved being with their grandkids and proudly watched them grow up. Circles of friends through Holy Family Church and good neighbors were very important to them. Then, from 2009-2012 Marcy lived with Ray at Terrace Heights Apartments in Mauston until her frailty led her to Cottage Care Circle in Mauston for more daily care. She and Ray have so appreciated the caring staff at Terrace Heights and Cottage Care.
Marcy enjoyed sewing, needlework, and perfecting her pattern-adjusting skills in classes and with friends for many years. Her attentiveness to people, events, and things ranged far and wide; nothing got by her. She discussed current events and politics with keen understanding. Though not the least bit athletic herself, she passionately followed local basketball, football, and baseball teams, especially those at the collegiate level, and relished talking players and statistics with her sports-loving grandson. She was a skilled cook and baker who loved to try new things. Throughout her married life, Marcy was often the one to organize and host extended family gatherings. Many times she helped care for extended family members through their final illnesses.
Marcy leaves her beloved husband, Ray; children, Sr. Mary Hroscikoski, OSF (Little Falls, MN), John (Davenport, IA), Drs. Ann (David) Hoffmann (Mauston), and Amy (Drew) Mitchell (Buckingham, IA); grandchildren Vincent, Amanda, and Emily Hoffmann, and Joel and Claire Mitchell; and sister Nadine Oehler (North Liberty, IA), nieces and a nephew. She was preceded in death by her parents, sister, Pauline, a nephew and niece, and many good friends.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, March 23, 2013 at Holy Family Catholic Church in LaValle, WI, at 11:30 am, preceded by a visitation beginning at 10:00 am. Her cremains will be buried at St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Mauston, WI later this spring.
Memorials are preferred to Holy Family Church, La Valle, WI, or the American Cancer Society.
