Ileen Virginia Shannon, age 91, died on Sunday, March 17, 2013 at Schmitt Woodland Hills in Richland Center, Wisconsin, surrounded by her three sons. Ileen was born March 25, 1921 at her parents’ farm in Ironton township, Sauk County, Wisconsin, the daughter of Albert and Virginia (Smith) Ihde. She married Byron W. Shannon December 13, 1941. The marriage ended in divorce December 1951. She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Richland Center. Ileen was very active in her church and served on several committees. She lived in the Reedsburg, Wisconsin area until moving to Richland Center in 1966 to begin work in the office at Schmitt Methodist Home. She did the payroll, accounts receivable, collected rents, distributed mail to residents and answered the phone. The Schmitt Methodist Home became Schmitt Woodland Hills after a contest was held to select another name, and Ileen’s suggestion was chosen. She enjoyed her work there, retiring in 1988.
After retirement, she became active in the Foster Grandparent program for the Richland School District. She truly loved being with the children at Jefferson School and many of them still remember her as ‘Grandma Shannon’. She enjoyed traveling, reading and painting. Her real love was her family and she was the center of many family gatherings.
She is survived by Her brother Chester Ihde and his wife Hildred, Her sister Bertha Elwood and her husband Don, Her sons: B. Russell and his wife Barbara, Ronald and his wife Sue, Reverend William and his wife Joyce. Her grandchildren: Christopher (Destiny) Shannon and their children Julianna, Clara, Amelia and Gabriella; Stephanie (Brian) Perkins and their children Tora, Teige and Tate; Benjamin (Catie) Shannon;
Casey (Angela) Shannon and their children Elizabeth, Emma, Scott and Samantha;
Justin Shannon; Nathan (Alisha) Shannon and their child Nicholas; Kathleen Shannon;
Ian Shannon; Special foster granddaughter Denise (Jorge) Garcia and their children Eliceo and Mia have always been a part of her family.
Ileen is further survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends
She was preceded in death by her infant daughter Janice Ileen; her parents Albert and Virginia; her brother Donald; sister Ruby Meyer; nephew Jerry Meyer; and grandniece Theresa Meyer.
Funeral Services will be held at 1:00 PM on Thursday, March 21, 2013 at the TRINITY UNITED METHODIST CHURCH, 400 East Seminary Street in Richland Center. Pastor Bill Busch will officiate. Visitation will be held at the PRATT MEMORIAL CHAPEL, 120 North Park Street on Wednesday, March 20, 2013 from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM. Visitation on Thursday will be at the church from 11:00 AM until service time. The Pratt Funeral and Cremation Service is assisting the Shannon family.
