Isles Battle Sabres In Buffalo

(Sports Network) - The mighty Buffalo Sabres will try to extend their winning streak to four games today, when they host the New York Islanders in a New Year's Day tilt at HSBC Arena.

The Sabres, who lead the Eastern Conference with 59 points, are a perfect 3-0 so far on a four-game homestand. For the season, they are an impressive 13-4-2 in Buffalo.

Thomas Vanek had two goals and an assist and Daniel Briere added a goal and an assist for the Sabres, who hold a 10-point edge over Montreal for first place in the Northeast Division.

Meanwhile, the Islanders have dropped their last two games and are coming off Saturday's shutout loss to visiting New Jersey. Martin Brodeur made 29 saves to record his sixth shutout of the season and the Devils skated to the 2-0 win at Nassau Coliseum.

Rick DiPietro finished with 34 saves for the Islanders, who are third in the Atlantic Division with 41 points.

New York has been mediocre away from Long Island this year, going 8-8-1 on the road.
