Cowboys Release Ellis

Posted: 1:35 pm CDT June 2, 2009

(Sports Network) - The Dallas Cowboys have released linebacker Greg Ellis, who had spent 11 seasons with the club.

Ellis was selected by the Cowboys with the eighth overall selection of the 1998 draft and played 162 games, including 156 starts, for the franchise. He has recorded 634 tackles and is eighth in club history with 77 sacks, including eight last season.

The 33-year-old product of North Carolina won the NFL Comeback Player of the Year Award in 2007 after recovering from a torn Achilles that limited him to nine games the previous season. He compiled a career-high 12 1/2 sacks in just 13 games during the '07 campaign and earned his first career trip to the Pro Bowl.
