MADISON, Wis. -

A new lion cub may soon call Madison home after the Henry Vilas Zoo reached their Giving Tuesday fundraising goal.

The zoo needed to raise $5,000 in donations to take in a male African lion from Seattle. So far, they’ve raised more than $8,000.

The male lion will join the zoo’s female lioness Shakura sometime in January.

Additional funds raised will go to the animal welfare fund to continue bringing new animals to the zoo. In the lion cub’s case, it will pay for shipping costs.

“It’s so important for our zoo. This is a great asset. The Henry Vilas Zoo is a free place for people to come, for anybody to come and leave Madison and see the world. And you can see animals from around the world here. It is so important to our zoo to have a male and female lion,” Alison Pange, with Friends of the Zoo, said.

Additional donations can be made online to help the zoo.
